My puppy threw up. What symptoms mean I should take her to the vet?

Hello. I am so sorry that Cleo has been vomiting. Vomiting can be caused by dietary indiscretion ( getting into the garbage ), a bacterial infection, an intestinal blockage from ingesting something, or a virus like Parvo. If she is eating, then feeding small amounts of a bland diet made up of boiled chicken & plain white rice might correct her upset. But if she refuses food &/or has diarrhea, then she really needs to be seen by a veterinarian. A puppy this young can become dehydrated in as little as a day & that will be very dangerous to her overall health. Vomiting and diarrhea have many causes including intestinal worms, inflammation, infection, dietary problems (including dietary indiscretion or eating things pets are not supposed to eat, food sensitivities/allergies), ingestion of foreign bodies or exposure to toxins, bacterial overgrowth in the gut, problems in the stomach, intestines, or even problems outside of the intestinal tract/stomach including pancreatitis, kidney/liver problems, metabolic disease (diabetes,etc), endocrine diseases (thyroid or other hormone problems), etc. Usually, in puppies, we worry about intestinal parasites, infection (parvo/coronavirus), foreign body ingestion or dietary indiscretion. A thorough history and physical exam with resultant diagnostics such as fecal tests, blood tests, imaging studies such as x-rays/ultrasound can be done to try to determine what is going on. Puppies should be dewormed starting at 2 weeks of age and then every 2-3 weeks. This should be done multiple times and should continue for 3-4 times after weaning. When puppies nurse, they continue to get infected with intestinal parasites from their mother. Good luck

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The licking of other dogs' private parts is a gross habit, but probably not the cause of the vomiting. Causes of vomiting in a puppy can include dietary intolerance or indiscretion, food allergy, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection (including parvo virus if not completely vaccinated), among a few others. If the vomiting lasts longer than 12-24 hours, or if Prince develops other symptoms, such as diarrhea, lethargy, abdominal pain, etc he should see a vet as soon as possible. I would only offer small meals of Prince's normal puppy food, or small pieces of boiled chicken breast in this period. If he isn't interested in food, it may be a sign that he is very nauseous and he should get checked out by a vet. I hope he starts feeling better soon!

It sounds like Princess may have eaten something naughty (trash, toilet paper, paper plate, sock, toy stuffing, other) that decided to come back up. The fact that she has shown no signs today is promising. If she has eaten and kept it down, you are likely in the clear. Caveat: Do watch her closely for the next 2-3 days because if a smaller piece of whatever it was did get through and gets lodged in the intestine, you'll see lots more vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, etc. If this happens, it's time to see the vet. I believe I see milk in the bowl you have in the picture there. If that is the case I would stop giving that right away. Domino is more than old enough not to still be getting puppy milk. If she continues to vomit after stopping the milk, then it's best to take her to your vet for a full examination and possible testing to determine why she is vomiting so that we know how to best help her. Also I would recommend bathing her in Dawn dish detergent to strip all the fleas off her for now. Make sure not to get any in her eyes and follow up with an oatmeal based or aloe based shampoo and conditioner to prevent her skin from getting too dry. She is old enough for Revolution topical flea and heartworm preventative from your local vet, so I would recommend getting her hat to protect her from the fleas here moving forward. I am sorry to hear about Coca! It is pretty common for dogs to occasionally vomit if they ate something that didn't agree with their stomach, but we do want to be certain we don't have something more serious going on here. In puppies we especially want to watch vomiting because of a disease called Parvo virus which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and anorexia. This is a serious disease which requires aggressive treatment. Because of this, if your puppy continues to vomit, has dairrhea (especially if it has blood in it), is lethargic or not eating then she should see a vet right away. We would also worry if she ingested a large piece of uncooked potato about a possible obstruction, so this would be another reason to monitor her closely. If she seems to have a normal level of energy, is not having diarrhea and doesn't vomit any more then I would just continue to monitor her.
