My puppy swam after Frontline Plus. Is it effective? Should I reapply?

The active ingredients in Frontline Plus are rather safe, so I would not be worried about any toxic effects this long after you applied the previous dose. Considering the bathing likely did remove a fair amount of the previous solution and you are seeing fleas, it's safe to say that Maddie will need some extra protection. The manufacturer recommends not bathing until 48 hours after applying Frontline, but I always advise not to give a bath one week after applying topical medications like Frontline to be safe. To be extra safe, you can get a different product prescribed by a veterinarian. I hope that helps and all is well with Maddie.

You can wash the product off his har with Dawn dish soap (it is a grease/oil remover). Then wait 24 hours and apply the Frontline again. If you can't get the topical product on him effectively you may need to switch to an oral product or use a Seresto collar. One Seresto collar lasts up to 8 months. It is very cost effective and easy to use. You didn't mention the age of your puppy so be sure to read all package instructions to make sure products are safe to use on whatever age your puppy is. I would refrain from reapplying this topical product, because you cannot be sure how much of it was rinsed off and it is best to not overdose him. Also the biting and scratching can be normal for any pet that has just received flea preventative if there was a large infestation of fleas. The "itch cascade" as we call it can last even after the parasites are gone, and often pets require a short course of steroids or a steroid shot to stop the itch completely. Your best option at this point, if you still see evidence of fleas or ticks, is to follow up with a medication called Capstar. This is the only flea ridding product that can be used in conjunction with topical flea preventatives, because it does not last in the pets system very long. You can safely redose the Pet armour in 2 weeks time. However I will say I am not a fan of this product and find there are better, more effective ones on the market. For instance, Bravecto, Nexgard, Advantage Multi, just to name a few.

You are correct that the water and the baths will interfere with her Frontline. Even though she will be a little late for the medication, long-term this will not likely cause any effects. Frontline (fipronil) can actually be applied every 3 weeks so it's close enough for you to apply. I will tell you that in my own experiences with fipronil, it seems to be less effective on fleas. There seem to be lots of reports of product failure with fipronil and I have even noticed that with my personal pets. So go ahead and reapply. Remember to not bathe Hana for at least 2-3 days and I always advise if you need to bathe her, get some oatmeal shampoo without soap or detergent. Soaps and detergent containing shampoos will strip some of the product off of her and will make it even less effective and cut down on the time that the product will work. If the fipronil continues to fail I would consult with your local veterinarian and see what products they would advise in your area. Good luck with Hana

I would not reapply the advantix until she is due. Getting wet once or twice shouldn't greatly affect the efficacy of the product. But if she is a water dog one of the oral flea and tick medications may be a better match for Tikka

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It should be ok as long as you applied to topical after the bath. If the fleas are slow moving it is likely the treatment is working. There are still fleas in the environment that have to get on the pet in order to die. Continue the treatment every 4 weeks for 3-4 doses. You can apply after 3 weeks if you are still seeing live fleas. Also remember to treat all pets in the home. Kisses to Charlie!
