GSD puppy loose stool won't stop after food change. What to ask vet?

This is not normal. I would have your vet recheck his stool to ensure all the coccidia is gone and no other parasites are present. I would also consider having him checked for giardia. Also, make sure he is on a high quality puppy food like science diet or royal canin. Some of these more expensive, “high protein, grain trees” food can be too rich for them. At his age he really only needs dry kibble. Canned food and milk can also cause an upset stomach and be too rich for him. Finally make sure he isn’t getting into anything like eating dirt, bugs, etc as these things can also cause diarrhea. He may need a probiotic to help balance his normal bacteria. I would talk to your vet about a good suggestion for his age and weight and current health. I hope this helps!

Finding the cause of the diarrhea is the most important thing right now as the treatment will depend on the cause. If you haven't already, having a fecal exam done as well as possible bloodwork or X-rays is best. This can help rule out common issues such as parasites, infections, etc that can cause diarrhea. German Shepherds are also prone to some issues that can cause malabsorption, which can lead to diarrhea, discolored stool, weight loss, etc. Bloodwork can help to rule these out, and in most cases the issue is resolved with a daily medication. If no major issues can be found, then a food trial may be helpful for finding any food allergies causing the GI upset.

It is possible that Chloe is having an adverse food reaction and might not be tolerating the Purina Lamb and Rice. I recommend having your veterinarian check a sample of her diarrhea to make sure no parasites are present, but if everything looks okay, you might consider a prescription hypoallergenic diet trial. If that doesn't help, German Shepherds are known to occasionally have some chronic diarrhea that can be due to enzyme deficiencies, so further testing might be warranted. Hopefully a simple food change might be enough.

This sounds more like a gastrointestinal problem to me. I recommend switching to a bland diet like Hills prescription i/d or sensitive stomach. Check a fecal also for parasites. GSD also get pancreatic insufficiency that can have similar symptoms and that is treated with an enzyme supplement. I recommend a second opinion with another veterinarian before consulting a neurosurgeon. In the meantime if you apply a thin film of Vaseline to the fur around the rectum and down the legs the diarrhea won’t stick to the fur and she will stay cleaner. Poor girl. Many things can cause loose stool including intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency) or Giardia just to name a few. I would recommend rechecking the stool but also ensuring a Giardia test is also ran. Then I would discuss with your vet about any other symptoms such as weight loss, appetite changes, etc, to offer more clues as to what to test for next. A blood panel may also offer some insight as to what is causing the loose stools. You didn't mention that your vet treated Echo with anything, so I would recommend starting off with Metronidazole and a probiotic to see if this resolves the problem before delving into other extensive testing. Causes for diarrhea could include irritation to something that Luka ate, intestinal parasites, stress, or a tummy bug. I would start by feeding the same formulation of food for 1 week. If he is still having diarrhea off an on in 1 week, it may time to have Luka examined by a veterinarian - take a fresh stool sample with you to the appointment so the vet can test it for intestinal parasties.
