My new 8-week-old puppy's stomach is growling. Is it normal?

Hey, I've had a German Shepherd puppy for a little over two days now. He is 8 weeks old. I was woken up at about 3:30 this morning by his stomach growling. It's very loud. He didn't seem hungry and he has drank some water. He has fell back asleep now but the stomach noises are continuing. Should I be worried?

No, I would not be worried about it. You are a very new doggy owner and I am glad to see your are observing even the little things. However, over the course of your dog's life you will hear lots of different noises coming from Jax's tummy. Most of these noises will be normal sound associated with the movement and contraction of the gastrointestinal tract. Unless you are seeing clinical signs of illness, I would not spend too much time worry about this. In terms of common GI issues in puppies, the most common one is diarrhea or malabsorptive disorders relating to parasites. Make sure Jax has been properly dewormed by bringing a fecal sample into your vet. They can check for parasites and deal with them if need be. Good luck with your puppy!

An upset stomach is a common problem with puppies and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). It may not be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If Jack has any of the following, then he should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can try feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions (1/4 cup or less) three times a day. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. Is loud stomach growling normal for my dog after eating and moving?

If it you only noticed it once, and she's otherwise totally normal, I wouldn't worry about it. If you're noticing a pattern of frequent loud stomach sounds, I would recommend discussing that with your vet to see if they would recommend any medical work up (it will depend on her overall health) or if you can try different dog foods -- perhaps probiotics or a bland prescription diet.

Well over time excessive vomiting can lead to issues along the GI tract like esophageal erosion, ulcers, etc. So it is best to try and get a handle on things now before they progress. One very possible cause for the vomiting at this consistency is a food allergy. Try discussing with your vet about getting Jax on a hypoallergenic food or highly digestible food such as Royal Canin Hypoallergenic hydrolyzed protein or Iams Intestinal Health Low Residue. These foods make it easier for the pet to digest leading to fewer vomiting episodes and overall good quality of health.

My dog's stomach gurgles and he eats grass often. Is this normal?

If Blue is not vomiting or having diarrhea, is eating normally, has a normal energy and no abdominal pain I wouldn't be concerned about the noises. You could try adding a probiotic (available at most pet stores and online) to his food to see if this makes a difference and seek veterinary care if he does start vomiting/diarrhea/lethargy/pain.

Puppy growls when touched after eating. Is it pain or behavior?

It would be unlikely that he has an obstruction if he is not vomiting. He could have some gastrointestinal discomfort from a parasite, infection, or possibly eating too fast or over-eating. If it continues, have him examined by your vet to determine if there is an abnormality. Your vet can check a stool sample to look for parasites and prescribe a dewormer, if needed. Your vet can also prescribe an antacid or gastrointestinal protectant to help relieve any discomfort.
