My puppy has a skin lump. Could it be cancer, or is it benign?

Thank you for posting the picture about Bowie. Cancer in young dogs does happen but it is very rare. More common would be a benign tumor called histiocytoma. These tumors usually resolve on their own within 4-6 weeks. However, I would still encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian. Although it's difficult to tell from a picture, at first glance I do think this potentially looks like a benign skin growth known as an adenoma. Since it is new, I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Mollie to see what they think it is. They might recommend taking a sample using a needle to help determine whether or not cancerous cells are present.

This may be a small skin tumor, a reaction or callus to a bite wound or cyst. In such a young puppy, any skin tumor like that is unlikely to be cancerous and certain kinds go away without any treatment. If it does not bother her you can continue to monitor it for any changes. If it bothers her or gets larger, then she will need to be seen for treatment. If it persist for longer than 2 months then I would get it seen.

This kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors. It does look like a small cyst, or even a benign skin tag, so just keep an eye on this for now, but do not worry, just show this to your veterinarian at Evie's next scheduled visit. The lump may be a benign or malignant growth. This could even be an infection. This cannot be completely assessed just by looking at pictures or a description and usually requires sampling such as fine needle aspiration to determine its origin. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign.
