My dog has a new lump on her skin. Is it cancerous or benign?

There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. Hello. This is probably one of the many benign skin nodules dogs can get. If it has been relatively quiet for the past several years, it is not likely a something neoplastic or of great concern. If it grows, changes color again, or begins to bleed, then it might be a good idea to just have it removed. Some benign growths can turn cancerous, although this is pretty rare. This could be due to a skin tumor (most likely benign called histiocytoma) or a smal inflammatory lump, possily due to an infection. a malignant skin cancer is highly unlikely given the fact that Nala is very young. Disinfection can be provided with saltwater used twice daily. This can wait two weeks for a vet's check up in my opinion.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Thank you for the image. This is likely a benign skin mass known as a sebaceous adenoma. They are common in older dogs and arise from sebaceous glands in the skin. You would need to have your dog physically examined by your veterinarian for confirmation. Removal is recommended if the lump grows larger or becomes ulcerated, but others may grow in the same spot or different areas. Keep it clean and dry and be careful not to irritate it during grooming/brushing or bathing.

Based on your picture these look like adenomas which are a benign type of skin mass. They can secrete material that is dark, but they can also occasionally become infected. Since Evie has had some behavior changes as well it would be a good idea to have your veterinarian examine the masses and confirm the diagnosis. Adenomas are benign and generally don't need to be removed unless they are infected or bothering the dog.

If conventional treatment has not prevented Lacy from getting at the mass, then have her seen by your veterinarian. She may need to have it surgically removed. Once that is done, it can be submitted for pathology to make sure it isn't anything to worry about. It could be a benign skin mass (sebaceous adenoma) that is common in older dogs. Removing it does not guarantee it will not regrow or keep others from popping up.
