Why haven't my 6-month-old dog's testicles dropped? Penis always out?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You should be able to feel the testicles. If you only feel one then the other testicle is still not descended. They should be both down by birth or by 4 months. It just means the vet will have to search for the retained testicle when he gets neutered. He should be neutered because it is a congenital or genetic disease and the testicle can become cancerous over time. I hope this helps!

If the testicle is just under the skin on his belly he could have an undescended testicle. In puppies this can sometimes correct with age, but if he is 6 months or older it likely won’t drop anymore. The vet can surgically remove the testicle during a neuter surgery.

Hello. It is too early to make any judgments as to if & when Diesel's testicles may drop. You certainly can wait until he is 6 months to a year of age, but if nothing is seen or felt by this time, he probably never will drop them. This can be a trait that is passed on to future puppies, so you definitely will not want to breed him. He should also be neutered in this case because the retained testicles are maintained at a much higher temperature in the body, & this can result in the testicular tissue turning cancerous. I am afraid it is unlikely they will descend at this stage. Cryptorchidism in Dogs, or retained testicles is a condition which needs to be surgically treated. The testes normally descend into the scrotum while an animal is very young. For dogs the descent to the final scrotal position is expected to be complete by the time the puppy is two months old. It may occur later in some breeds, but rarely after the age of six months. I would suggest scheduleing an appointment with a different veterinarian to have Beerus examined and to make a treatment plan.

If you have had Czar since he was a puppy and know that he was not neutered, then he is considered cryptorchid. This is a concern because testicles that are in the abdomen (not in the scrotum like they are supposed to be) are prone to becoming cancerous. I would recommend scheduling an appointment with your vet to discuss neutering him before he develops any problems. Dogs can have their sex determined easily as males have a penis that lies along the mid-line of their stomach and girls have nothing in the area. If you roll him on his back, and see a lumpy structure down the middle of his stomach near his back legs, that is a penis. If this is completely smooth then he is a girl. Testicles can take time to decend, up to 6 months, so if they aren't down yet (and at this age would be very small) then this isn't a concern. I recommend just waiting. Puppies will sit in many different ways that can look funny, so it is likely just a puppy thing. If he is walking, running, and playing normally then I would just monitor him for now, and have the vet check it out in 4 weeks when you get his next set of vaccines. If the testicle hasn't dropped by 6 months old, it is unlikely to do so. Leo will need to be neutered and have that testicle removed or else it can turn into a cancer. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
