My puppy's brother died of parvo; now he's sick. Is it parvo?

I would be very concerned about parvovirus since a littermate died and the virus is extremely contagious and can be fatal. I recommend getting Pup to a vet as soon as possible to have her. tested for the virus. If she is positive, I recommend hospitalization with IV fluid therapy and medications because this virus can cause severe dehydration in a puppy that young. If she is negative, I recommend they test her stool for microscopic parasite eggs. Although she may have been dewormed, not all medications treat all parasites and she may have something that needs to be addressed. Good luck and kisses to Pup!

I recommend to have your puppy examined quickly by the veterinarian. Whatever killed his sibling could be effecting him as well. Parvovirus and poisoning would be on the list of possible causes but you cannot know without testing. Sometimes puppies can make it if they are treated early and aggressively but you have to know whats wrong. Have the puppy examined quickly. Best of luck.

I am so sorry to hear that Coco is sick. At 8 weeks old my biggest concerns would be parvovirus, intestinal parasites, and something called intussusception. This is where the intestine telescopes on itself and causes a functional obstruction. I would highly encourage you to have a follow up appointment or seek a second opinion. An 8 week old puppy will become dehydrated and decompensate quickly without supportive care. IV fluids, anti nausea medications and anti diarrhea meds would be a good plan while the diagnostics are Being run to identify the problem such as fecal Exams, parvo test, CBC, And probably repeat x-rays. I am sorry to hear that Oscar is so ill. His symptoms are very suspicious of parvovirus, which can be lethal to pets. He could also have intestinal parasites. The black stool indicates that he may have some blood in his poop. You should take him to your local vet to get tested. If he does have parvovirus then he needs treatment (i.e. antibiotics, fluids, pain medication) through your vet for any chance of survival. If he only has intestinal parasites, then the vet can prescribe the appropriate dewormer based on which parasites are present on his fecal exam. I hope your puppy gets well soon and does not meet the same fate as your other poop puppy. If your pup does well, then make it a point to get Oscar vaccinated soon to protect him from deadly viruses like parvovirus and others, which are totally preventable through regular immunizations. Vomiting and diarrhea have many causes including intestinal worms, inflammation, infection, dietary problems (including dietary indiscretion or eating things pets are not supposed to eat, food sensitivities/allergies), ingestion of foreign bodies or exposure to toxins, bacterial overgrowth in the gut, problems in the stomach, intestines, or even problems outside of the intestinal tract/stomach including pancreatitis, kidney/liver problems, metabolic disease (diabetes,etc), endocrine diseases (thyroid or other hormone problems), etc. Usually, in puppies, we worry about intestinal parasites, infection (parvo/coronavirus), foreign body ingestion or dietary indiscretion. A thorough history and physical exam with resultant diagnostics such as fecal tests, blood tests, imaging studies such as x-rays/ultrasound can be done to try to determine what is going on. Puppies should be dewormed starting at 2 weeks of age and then every 2-3 weeks. This should be done multiple times and should continue for 3-4 times after weaning. When puppies nurse, they continue to get infected with intestinal parasites from their mother. Good luck

I'm sorry to hear that Bruno has been so sick. It is difficult for us to know what the problem is without more information and reviewing the blood work. A consultation may be more beneficial for you in that we can ask questions and you can upload the bloodwork for us to review. It is possible that Bruno is still fighting off parvovirus, but he may have also developed a new infection has parvo virus affects the immune system as well.

Coccidia symptoms include watery, mucousy diarrhea. explosive diarrhea that may eventually become bloody, lethargy and weakness, dehydration, abdominal discomfort and tenderness, vomiting., weight loss, and little or no appetite. The symptoms for parvo are very similar. In the picture your puppies still look pretty bright so this is a very good sign. Use unflavored Pedialyte or low sodium chicken broth to keep them hydrated. If they will eat, feed them small amounts of their regular puppy food, moistened with broth or Pedialyte to encourage them. If they continue to vomit though you may want to hold off on solid food as vomiting will dehydrate them faster and undo the good work you've been doing.
