My puppy is sick after boarding. What's wrong and what should I do?

Vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy are quite concerning in any dog, especially puppies because of the diseases they can get such as parvovirus. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. They would be able to check for this disease as well as checking for other possibilities such as intestinal worms or other infections. The sooner these diseases are diagnosed the better the outcome tends to be. At the very least, Gus can be started on anti-nausea and anti-diarrhea medications and his hydration status can be checked. The most likely diseases are as follows: 1. Parvo, a virus that primarily attacks the immune system and intestines of dogs and is very lethal if left without supportive care. 2. Intestinal parasites which can cause intestinal blockage and even anemia (depletion of red blood cells). 3. Other viruses with varying severities. This is not an exhaustive list, just the most common things for a puppy. They will all lead to dehydration and other secondary issues which can all be severe enough to cause death. Whatever the underlying disease, he looks very ill and needs attention from a veterinarian immediately. I would recommend taking him to your nearest emergency veterinary hospital as soon as possible. It sounds like your dog picked up a severe upper respiratory tract infection. This could be kennel cough, but also canine influenza or pneumonia. Please take him to your veterinarian for an exam. Since he is shivering, and lethargic, this could be a life-threatening condition.

This can set off a bacterial imbalance in her gastrointestinal tract resulting in vomiting and diarrhea. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian today to see if this is the case. She will likely require fecal testing and some form of treatment depending on these results and her exam findings. She may receive an antibiotic, an anti-nausea medication and possibly fluid therapy. Just wondering if any blood work was done and if not I would advise getting some done to evaluate his overall health and internal organ function. Possibilities include intestinal parasites (roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, giardia, coccidia, etc), dietary indiscretion (eating things dogs are not supposed to eat), dietary/nutritional problem, infection/inflammation, foreign body ingestion, toxin exposure, other gastrointestinal diseases, disease in organs outside of the gastrointestinal tract (pancreatitis, kidney/liver disease, etc), among many other causes. The fact that he won't eat is significant since he will get weak and possibly dehydrated also if he is not drinking fluids. Your vet can reevaluate him and see if anything has changed on physical exam and then propose other tests if needed. Good luck with Hercules. I hope he feels better soon.

I am so sorry to hear that Pepper isn’t feeling well. Boarding can be very stressful for dogs and sometimes they can develop stress colitis which can become very serious very quickly. Is she having any diarrhea? Other possibilities include Addison’s disease, intestinal foreign object/ obstruction, or even a viral disease. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. IV fluids may be recommended in addition to x-rays and possibly blood work. Hi,t hanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dewowmers have the potential to cause an upset stomach such as vomit, diarrhea and decreased appetite. Though I am worried something else is going on since you lost a puppy recently. I worry most about parvo virus in puppies this age, especially if they are yet to be vaccinated. I would have this puppy seen today by your Vet and tested for parvo virus as it is VERY contagious and if it is the cause it will likely affect the entire litter. If it isn't parvo the Vet can at least get this puppy feeling better and prevent dehydration. Good luck!
