My puppy had a seizure and is vomiting and pooping. What should I do?

Thnk you for submitting your question regarding Yuki. I recommend that sees a veterinarian right away. In the meantime, rub some karo or maple syrup on her gums. Puppies can have seizures if their blood sugar drops too low. She needs immediate care. Good luck!

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I would give a little Karo syrup on her gums and see if she will eat some dog food for you. See how she is after this. With her being so small, her blood sugar could be having difficulties regulating, especially if she is a picky eater or doesn't eat that much. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her now as well and see if there is anything else underlying predisposing her to these episodes. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. I would notify your vet that she had a possible seizure first. Then I would try to make sure she has a consistent source of food or sugar to keep her glucose levels steady, in case that was the cause for her seizure. If you see the event happen again then it's best to record it so that your vet can see what is happening and classify the event correctly. Continue to give her fluids and other medicaitons as instructed by your veterinarian, unless possible seizure can be a side effect of one of her medicaitons (i.e. metronidazole). If your puppy is a small or you breed dog then she is at risk for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), so it's important to give her nutrical, Karo syrup or honey (1 tsp) every 4-6 hrs if she hasn't gained her appetite back yet. Once she starts to eat on her own then discuss with your vet how often she should get the sugar source, if at all. I hope that your pup survives her CPV infection. Best wishes and take care.

Bailey will likely be lethargic and incoordinated after this seizure and it will take a while for them to resolve. If Bailey has not been seen for these seizures by a veterinarian then I would highly recommend having Bailey examined by a vet so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. For now, let him rest and provide plenty of water for him. The sooner he is seen the better. Place him in a quiet area so that there are no triggers (light, noise, etc) that may set off another seizure. You can try rubbing a small amount of karo syrup on Bruno's gums in case the seizure if from low blood sugar, but he needs immediate medical attention even if the karo seems to help. Seizures in young puppies can be from low blood sugar, congenital liver disease, toxin or other disease. It is important to get medical attention asap as uncontrolled seizures could be fatal.

Vomiting and bloody stools can occur from many conditions such as foreign body ingestion and obstruction, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. If he is having seizures that make this very serious as this is possibly unrelated and could be seen with conditions such as low blood sugar from vomiting, brain inflammation, epilepsy, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Bruno evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics and possibly an MRI. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If you could get her attention and she seemed conscious during the episode, it was not a seizure. Extreme lethargy can cause her not to move very much and appear immobile. The vomiting could be causing low electrolytes and glucose which can definately cause lethargy in very young and small animals. It can also dehydrate them very quickly which can also cause lethargy. If she is vomiting, lethargic, and not eating, I would take her into see her emergency veterinarian right away. It is hard to say what Aries has without examining her first but at her age it could be a bacterial or viral infection causing the symptoms. I hope you are able to take her in soon.
