Why does my 2-month-old puppy have scabs, spots, and hair loss?

Puppies have very sensitive skin and can be prone to skin infections. Benji may have puppy pyoderma. Without seeing him in person, I can't diagnose what is causing his symptoms. I'd have him seen by a vet to have this diagnosed and treated. Best of luck.

I would have this checked by a vet. It sounds very much like ringworm. Although the name suggests otherwise, ringworm is not caused by a worm at all-but a fungus. This highly contagious infection can lead to patchy areas of hair loss on a pet, and can spread to other animals-and to humans, too. Classic symptoms of ringworm include lesions that typically appear on a pet’s head, ears, paws and forelimbs. These lesions can cause patchy, crusted circular “bald spots” that sometimes look red in the center. In mild cases of ringworm, there may be just a few broken hairs, while bad cases of ringworm can spread over most of a pet’s body. It’s also possible for a pet to carry the fungus and not show any symptoms whatsoever. Treatment of ringworm depends on the severity of the infection. A veterinarian may prescribe a medicated shampoo or ointment that contains miconazole or a dip such as lime sulfur to kill the fungus. In some cases, oral medications are necessary to cure ringworm. In severe cases, it may be necessary to use a topical and oral treatment, in addition to clipping away the fur. Once treatment begins, lesions should begin to heal in about one to three weeks. Please note, it is important to treat your pet for as long as recommended by your veterinarian. Even though the skin lesions may have cleared up, this doesn’t mean your pet is cured or can’t infect another animal or person. Certain diagnostic tests may need to be repeated in order to ensure cure. And unfortunately, there is no guarantee that reinfection won’t occur!

I'm sorry to hear Benito is having a skin issue. Focalized hair loss can be secondary to a contact allergy, skin parasites (mites), an infection (bacterial or fungal), or an underlying medical issue. If it isn't itching or bothering him, I would recommend stopping the topical therapies and then having it evaluated at his next set of shots to see if they can determine the underlying cause for his skin lesion and any treatment that may be needed. If he starts bothering at it or it starts spreading I'd have him seen sooner. Good luck!

Poor guy, he does look miserable. You did not indicate if he has had a skin scraping. It really looks suspicious of a type of mange caused by the Demodex mite. This is NOT a contagious form of mange like Sarcoptic mange....so Ben may have it and his sister could be fine. Demodex presents as very red skin with hair loss. If he had not been checked for this, that is the very first thing to do.

Buddy may have a mite infection (demodicosis) or a bacterial/fungal skin infection. I suggest you make an appointment with your veterinarian for a skin exam, possibly some diagnostics (skin swab, culture or biopsy) and relevant treatment.

Without seeing it in person, I can't say if it's mange or ringworm for sure. Ringworm is typically a circular lesion that is red in color. Mange can be demodex or sarcoptic, but again without seeing him in person, I don't know which type it is. At the vet, they will likely use a Wood's lamp to see if the spot is ringworm, as infected hairs can fluoresce under the ultraviolet light. Not all cases of ringworm will do this, so a fungal culture may be needed. To diagnose mange, the vet takes skin scrapings, and looks at the sample under a microscope. The demodex mite is typically easily seen with a skin scraping, while it can take several skin scrapings to find the sarcoptic mite. Once the cause is found, the vet can discuss treatment with you. It could be caused by many different things. He could have demodex, ringworm, flea allergy dermatitis, scabies, etc. Since he is constantly itching, he should be examined by a vet to determine the exact cause. Your vet can do a skin scrape, culture, cytology, etc. to help diagnose and then prescribe the best medications to treat. I do not think apple cider vinegar will give him the relief that he needs.
