My Havanese puppy has a crusty bald spot that isn't itchy. What is it?

Hair loss can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. I'm not sure if you mean it resolved after 3 weeks or if it has been there for three weeks and is still there, but if Bella still has a bald patch I recommend making an appointment to have her seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the hair loss as soon as you can. The vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area (taken by a procedure known as a skin scraping) and examined under the microscope to determine what kind(s) of infection may be present and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment. I can see that Benji has a few small areas of hair loss with yellow crusting, and these lesions could be due to ringworm, mange, or a skin infection. In order to accurately diagnose these lesions, a vet should perform a skin scraping and fungal culture/Wood's lamp exam. Both ringworm and Sarcoptic mange (scabies) can be transmitted to other dogs and humans, so it is certainly worth having the lesions evaluated. I hope that Benji is on the mend soon!

The area on Desi's back does not seem irritated, infected or swollen. I would continue to monitor it. Start by taking a ruler and measuring the affected area. In a week check back to see if it has gotten larger or smaller. It larger I would alter Desi in for an examination by her vet. There are several causes of hair loss, but he most common is traumatic biting by dogs when they have an itch in their skin. This could be caused by allergies or parasites. Since Tobby has had this lesion for 4 months, I think it’s worthwhile to have him seen again. The doctor may recommend a diagnostic called a skin scraping to check for any mites in the skin which require treatment. The doctor may also recommend a medicated shampoo and perhaps a diet change. There is a good diet called Royal Canin and it is very good for dogs with dry skin or skin problems. Changing him to this diet may help as well. You can also add an omega 3 fatty acid supplement to the diet as it is good for the skin. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any further questions.

Buddy may have a mite infection (demodicosis) or a bacterial/fungal skin infection. I suggest you make an appointment with your veterinarian for a skin exam, possibly some diagnostics (skin swab, culture or biopsy) and relevant treatment.

The main reasons for hair loss include allergies, other primary dermatologic conditions, certain endocrine diseases, or self-inflicted trauma. Based on the look of the skin, it doesn't appear to be irritated or itchy.. Usually hair loss without itchiness is attributed to a systemic problem or something immune mediated in nature. Lastly, there are also some instances where dogs and/or cats can lose hair for no apparent reason without their being any sort of problem. To figure out the reason with certainty, some testing of the affected area would be required. If Bryant isn't showing any other problems right now and the area of effect is not growing in size, it isn't really an urgent thing to get checked out. Itchy skin and hair loss is often due to the following things: 1) Allergies - this can happen suddenly and is usually due to an environmental (i.e pollen) cause. 2) External parasites - fleas, lice and mites can all cause intense itching. It's good to check him for fleas and get treatment if needed. The permethrin shampoo is only temporary, so it's possible that he is getting re- infested. He may have mites, which are microscopic and require a vet to find. 3) Over-bathing, or using the wrong product for bathing - Bathing too often can cause the skin to get dry and irritated. Dogs should normally be bathed no more than once a month with a shampoo that is labeled for dogs. If you bathe more than that, or use a shampoo or soap that is meant for people, then you could be damaging the normal protective barrier of the skin. One thing you can do for itchy skin, is give a bath with cool water using an oatmeal or aloe shampoo. You can get these shampoos at the pet store. I hope this helps you to identify the problem.
