What food is safe for my young puppy and when can I train him?

Great question! At almost two months of age, Ooge is old enough to be fed a puppy formulated food. It has to be a puppy formulated food because puppies require higher amounts of protein, calcium, and calories than an adult dog. A puppy food will provide everything he needs to grow properly. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. On the bag, there is a daily recommended amount of food, and I would divide that into three equal portions to feed him three times a day, once in the morning, noon, and evening. Once he turns six months old, he can be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. I hope this helps :-)

Congratulations on your new addition! As a general rule of thumb, I typically recommend feeding Science Diet, Royal Canin or Purina ProPlan foods. These companies do extensive clinical testing to assure that their foods are nutritionally appropriate and source ingredients appropriately. Odin should eat a puppy food until he is 1 year old. Anytime you change his diet, be sure to do so by gradually mixing old and new foods together over a 5-7 day period. Sudden diet changes have a greater chance of causing vomiting and diarrhea.

Your puppy is still a bit young for lots of training, he is still a baby. I suggest you book in to a puppy training class once his vaccinations are done. Milo should have teeth by now so either a starter puppy food from a high quality brand like Royal Canin, Eukanuba or Hills Science diet . Make sure it's a puppy Large Breed food as well. Natural Balance is also a relatively good brand of food as well. You may have to do canned food for a few weeks if puppy has a hard time with the dry kibble. A few general recommendations: stick with well known brands with a good reputation. Look for products made in the USA. Kibble works great for treats and I use Purina Pro Plan chicken or lamb and rice. Dry biscuit type treats usually have less calories and salt. The jerky or moist type treats are fine in moderation (they have more calories and salt usually). Lastly, many dogs really like dehydrated chicken livers and chicken jerky.
