Why is my 9-week-old puppy's poop bloody with mucus? Should I worry?

9 week old puppy has blood and mucus in poo for the last couple of days. How should I approach this, should I be worried?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Kaiya. Poor girl. Blood in the poop can be caused by intestinal worms, a stomach illness, sudden change in diet, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or a severe illness like parvo. Because poop in the poop can have some very serious causes and it's been going on for a few days, it's time to see the vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing it and can treat her. You should be very worried as this is usually the first sign of parvo infection. it could also be a bacterial gastrointestinal infection but either way this is something that needs to be treated by a vet ASAP.

Your puppies need to be examined by the veterinarian. Pooping blood is always a concern and a sign of disease and inflammation. There could be many potential causes. Because these puppies are so young, they need medical intervention earlier than adult dogs. Have them seen with in the next 24 hours. Make sure to bring in a stool sample for testing. Best of luck.

Wow, that is quite a bit of blood. I suggest you have Elijah examined by a vet.
Here are some things that can cause bloody stools:

1. Parvovirus
2. Parasites: the most common parasites that cause blood in the stool are hookworms, whipworms, and roundworms
3. Dietary Indiscretions
4. Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis
5. Rectal Injuries
6. Rectal polyps
7. Stress

Since he is doing otherwise well, my best guess is that he has parasites; even if he has been dewormed. I suggest you have your vet test his feces for parasites. Best wishes.

This droplet could be from a little injury in the rectum when she had the hard, dry poop. She must have held that in for longer than usual, then the body pulls more moisture out and it becomes dark, hard and dry.
If this was the only time a droplet of blood comes out and there are no further ones, then I do not think you have to worry
Should this happen often, then she could be suffering from worms, colitis or a similar cause and I would bring a stool sample (fresh) and your dog to the vet for an exam.

My puppy's poop is bloody, gooey, grey, and watery. What should I do?

The most common reason that we will see soft stool (with or without blood or mucous in it) in a puppy is some type of intestinal parasite. You didn't mention how old Ivy is or if your vet has checked a stool sample, but puppies can commonly have intestinal parasites. Some are microscopic, so the only way to know that they have them is for your vet to look under the microscope. And even if a puppy has been dewormed, it is common for them to have other intestinal parasites since there are no many different types of parasites and they each require a specific type of deworming. So, my first recommendation is to have your veterinarian do a fecal check on Ivy, then decide on an other treatment. Sometimes puppies need a probiotic for their intestinal tract depending on their age and diet history, so be sure to talk to your veterinarian about that as well. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. This sounds like she may have intestinal worms. I recommend using a puppy deworming treatment dosed carefully for her weight and repeated as per directions. A probiotic is also recommended to promote recovery. If she develops a fever or loss of appetite she must be seen by your vet

My dog's poop has mucus and is dark. Should I take him to the vet?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Kai. Mucus covering the stool typically indicates inflammation in the colon. This is not normal. If she is eating, drinking and acting normal, then it is not likely necessary to seek emergency veterinary care. If she starts acting ill or you see obvious blood in her stool, then she should be seen. Otherwise, I would see her veterinarian again or seek a second opinion. It is not normal for her to have ongoing GI issues. There are a variety of fecal and blood tests that can be used to help reach a diagnosis. A diet trial could also be beneficial. This blood in his diarrhea could be due to intestinal worms, eating something rotten, a foreign body, parvo if he isn't vaccinated, or a severe stomach illness. He should definitely see a vet for this. As long as he is otherwise ok, it can wait until the morning. If he starts vomiting, has more bloody diarrhea, is very lethargic, stops drinking water, or is vomiting water, take him into an ER vet immediately. I hope this helps!

My new puppy has runny, bloody, mucousy poop. Should I worry?

This type of diarrhea could be due to G.I. parasites, which is not uncommon at all in puppies. This could also be related to the stress of a new home environment or diet change if it's occurred in the past week or so. There are over-the-counter deworming medication. However you may want to contact your veterinarian and see if they want you to bring in a fecal sample so they can tell you for sure if she has G.I. parasites. Generally speaking deworming medication it's fairly safe and would not be harmful if your puppy did not have parasites. However there are some G.I. parasites that require prescription strength deworming medication. But your veterinarian could do the fecal test and tell you if that is the case.

Yes, please take Kiwi to the veterinarian. The mucus and blood in the stool can be due to many things including parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, or from intestinal bleeding due to medications. Since Kiwi is a younger dog he should recover quickly once the reason for this diarrhea is diagnosed and treated. Kiwi may become dehydrated and anemic if this continues and he could become very weak and ill so please get him treatment soon.
