My puppy refuses diarrhea meds. Does hiding it in food work?

Poor pup. If your puppy isn't eating and taking medicine by mouth, then she may be too sick to be treated at home. Also some medications, such as antibiotics, require a full meal to avoid causing stomach upset in your pet. In this scenario, I would highly recommend getting injectable medicines done for her at your local vet clinic, that way you can ensure she gets the medicine she needs. Discuss this option with your vet. I am unsure what your pet is being treated for, but if the situation is dire, then your pet may need to be hospitalized in order to give the injectable medications repeatedly. Hello, sorry to hear about Waffle. Some GI signs may persist for up to 5 days. In addition to the medication you were given, you may try to feed your dog a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and low fat cottage cheese for 3-5 days. If his signs are not improving, or if he develops bloody diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, or a decreased appetite, then he should be evaluated by his veterinarian again as he may need additional medications. Hello. If Snowden likes ice cream, then yes, definitely use this as a treat. If she refuses the ice cream with the pill, you can try crushing the pill & mixing it into something liquid ( like melted ice cream ). Use a syringe or small baster, pull back a little on the corner of her lips on one side & squirt in. I would also try jarred meat based baby food. Many dogs like this. If Peggy has a large worm burden (lots of worms) then she likely feels sick and doesn't want to eat, and likely won't want to eat until the worms are gone. If the medication that your vet gave is a dewormer (typically a liquid called Panacur/Fenbendazole), then you can give it without food. This might clear out the worms and get Peggy eating again. If the medication is an antibiotic (Metronidazole, Amoxyclav), then this needs to be given with food. You can also talk to your vet about trying an anti-nausea medication to see if this helps with the appetite. If Peggy has abdominal pain, or is vomiting, please have her seen right away as high worm burdens can lead to a very life-threatening condition called intussusception. It depends on the situation and what Snow was diagnosed with. If your vet has already prescribed her meds, I would call and see when you should expect resolution of the diarrhea. If you haven't seen a vet yet, I would recommend doing that. A small dog like her can become really dehydrated really quick from diarrhea. Your vet will be able to determine the cause and get her started on the proper meds to help her feel better. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Any medication you give a lactating dog will be passed through the milk to the puppy. I do not suggest any human medications and if her diarrhea is severe you should have her examined by your Vet and a fecal test ran to rule out intestinal parasites. It easily could be the food you are feeding as she should be eating a puppy food. I would try a bland diet of boiled chicken and hamburger with rice for a few says. A probiotic should be fine, I like Purina Fortiflora. I hope this helps!

This question really depends on what medicaiton she is getting daily. Yes it is true that some pets take time to adjust but she should still be energetic and relatively normal otherwise. She also should be receptive to taking yummy irrresistible treats. I would recommend offering her some boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to see if you can coax her to eat a full meal. Once she eats you should be able to resume her medicaiton. Also please keep in mind that some medicaitons can cause lack of appetite as a side effect so it is important to have her re-evaluated by your local vet if she is having such a reaction.
