My dog's diarrhea medicine isn't working, what should I do next?

Hello, sorry to hear about Rusty. Dietary indiscretions that lead to a decreased appetite, vomiting and even diarrhea may take up to 3-5 days to resolve. You should continue to feed a bland diet consisting or plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and low fat cottage cheese for 5 days to see how his GI tract responds. If the diarrhea continues, then Rusty may need anti-diarrhea medications, probiotics, and to rule out infectious parasites. Have your veterinarian examine Rusty if the he develops bloody diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, or even a severely decreased appetite. Hope this helps and best of luck.

This may be a sequel to the medications given. I suggest you fast Maggie for 24 hours and then put the dog on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up problem, or if your dog gets lethargic, it needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

Glad to hear there is some improvement in Tuckers diarrhea. I would stop all food for 24hrs, he can continue to have water. Then reintroduce a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for 2-3 days. After that you can reintroduce the dog food. Sometime the stomach just needs a complete reset and will take a few days for the stool to return to being completely firm. I hate to hear Chicken Noodle is not feeling well! Yes, this can be a side effect of the medication but other causes are also possible. I recommend to start by calling your veterinarian. They will ask you several questions and help to determine if the medication should be continued or if additional care is needed. There are a couple things you can do at home that may also help. A bland diet for 48 hours can help. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A probiotic may also be beneficial. Purina carries a nice one called FortiFlora if you can find it. Your vet will also have a nice one as well. You can add additional water to her food to help prevent dehydration. If your dog does not start showing improvement after 48 hours of being on the medication and/or if his symptoms persist, then you should take him back to your veterinarian for a recheck. He may need additional diagnostics like blood work, X-rays, and/or a parvo test (depending on his vaccination status). He may also need supportive care like nausea medication and fluid therapy. There are several things I try for diarrhea that is not responding to typical treatments - sometimes I give the medications for a longer duration, sometimes I'll try a different antibiotic, and sometimes I'll try a different diet (which it sounds like your vet is attempting with the EN). Your vet might also want to retest a stool sample - sometimes with diarrhea there just isn't enough actual feces to get a positive results. Chronic diarrhea can also be caused by inflammatory bowel disease which is a more severe form of IBS and ultrasound and special blood testing can help diagnose this. Corticosteroid medications and B12 injections are often the recommended treatments for IBD.

These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the intestine, the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. A probiotic like pro-kolin can be added to the diet. I would definitely recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
