My dog has diarrhea but is still eating. How long will it last?

It really depends on the cause and the treatment that is used. If your dog has diarrhea that has lasted more than a few days than he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat the problem. He could have an infection, parasite, colitis, etc. Your vet can run labwork to help diagnose and prescribe medicine to treat.

I would take Snowball back to your vet, since it's been going on for three days and hasn't resolved with a bland diet. They will likely prescribe medication for the diarrhea so that it will clear up more quickly.

There are many reasons why dogs develop diarrhea. Some of these reasons are that they are something they shouldn't like trash, fatty foods, or possibly ate something that isn't food at all, such as a piece of a toy, stick, or stone. A dog may also develop diarrhea from parasites, ingesting a toxin, or some sort of infectious disease, among many other possibilities. My general cutoff if a dog is eating and drinking well and acting normally is 36 hours without the diarrhea resolving likely warrants a trip to the veterinarian. Your vet will examine Natty Boh and may recommend abdominal radiographs and possibly some bloodwork. The vet may prescribe an antidiarrhea medication and because diarrhea can lead to dehydration, they may offer to give her some fluids either under her skin (subcutaneously or in an IV). Until you can get Natty Boh to the veterinarian I would recommend making sure she is drinking well. I would recommend contacting your veterinarian when you are able to see if this is expected or if Dallas needs to be rechecked. If she begins vomiting, seems very lethargic, or if you see blood in the diarrhea you should see an emergency veterinarian right away.

It appears that Bebe is having some form of gastrointestinal irritation. This can definitely make a dog feel nauseous and stop eating. Diarrhea is a common problem and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). It may not be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If Bebe has any of the following, then she should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can help her get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available.
