My new puppy won't eat, has red poop after diet change. Is she sick?

Poor pups! The most common cause of diarrhea in puppies this age is intestinal parasites, so I would recommend taking a fecal sample to your vet to be checked tomorrow morning, if you can. He/she can prescribe an appropriate dewormer or other medication if needed, depending on what is found. If the fecal exam is normal, then it would be best to bring the puppies in for an exam sooner than next Monday if possible since they may need an antibiotic or other medication to treat the diarrhea - it's best not to let this go too long, since young puppies like this can get very sick, very quickly.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Raegan! Having diarrhea secondary to eating a different brand of food is common. I don't think it has to do with the brand but more with Raegan being more sensitive to abrupt food changed than other dogs. The blood commonly occurs with severe diarrhea, it indicated inflammation in the colon. When blood appears in the stool I think it is best to have the pet seen and antibiotics started (metronidazole). Other causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion and the obvious food intolerance. I feel it is best to have her seen before the weekend but if you can't get her in then I recommend fasting her for 12-24 hours to rest the GI tract then restart feeding with a bland diet. Boil chicken or hamburger and mix with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs and feed the diet until 2 normal stools then slowly transition her back to her dry food. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. At the very least they can address dehydration if present and start her on anti-diarrhea medications. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for your girl!

Given that you have had an outbreak of parvo recently, if Kora is now having watery red poop, I would be be afraid she may have parvo as well if she isn't fully vaccinated. Parvo is highly contagious. Unfortunately you did not attach a picture of her poop, so I can't say if the red color of her poo is due to blood or not. I would take her into a vet immediately to have a parvo snap test done. This will diagnose if she does have parvo or not. If she does, she needs supportive treatment with the vet to have the best chance for her to survive. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

I'm concerned that Baxter is sick. If he's getting a new food, this blood in his stool could be due to that. It could also be due to intestinal worms, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, or a severe stomach illness. I think it's best you take him into a vet now to get checked out.

Poor precious. Make sure she is eating about 5-6 small meals a day to help keep her blood sugar up. Since she is having vomiting and diarrhea I would really concerned about her getting dehydrated and weak. She could have something serious going on like parvo virus or a lot of intestinal parasites. I would strongly recommend to get her in to see your vet as soon as possible so they can test her for parvo and worms. They will be able to make sure she has the appropriate medicine to make her feel better and make sure she isn't getting dehydrated.

This type of diarrhea could be due to G.I. parasites, which is not uncommon at all in puppies. This could also be related to the stress of a new home environment or diet change if it's occurred in the past week or so. There are over-the-counter deworming medication. However you may want to contact your veterinarian and see if they want you to bring in a fecal sample so they can tell you for sure if she has G.I. parasites. Generally speaking deworming medication it's fairly safe and would not be harmful if your puppy did not have parasites. However there are some G.I. parasites that require prescription strength deworming medication. But your veterinarian could do the fecal test and tell you if that is the case.
