Puppy ate new food, now has bloody diarrhea. Should I see a vet?

Hello and thank you very much for your question. It is quite impressive that you are gradually trying to mix foods and did not do it cold turkey. Most people would have just switched over. The fact that there is blood in the feces is not an alarming thing unless your dog is lethargic, not eating, vomiting, and just not acting well. If, however, your dog is still playing and not showing any symptoms other than the bloody diarrhea, then I see no reason not to do the 24 hour fast. I have seen it happen many times where the addition of a different type of food can cause bloody diarrhea. But after a while, the feces starts to firm up and everything is fine. As long as your dog continues to act normal and playful, you can wait for up to three days before getting concerned enough to take him to the veterinarian. If after three days, the blood is still present in the diarrhea, then it would be best to take him to the veterinarian to do a complete physical examination as well as a fecal analysis. This blood in his diarrhea could be due to intestinal worms, eating something rotten, a foreign body, parvo if he isn't vaccinated, or a severe stomach illness. He should definitely see a vet for this. As long as he is otherwise ok, it can wait until the morning. If he starts vomiting, has more bloody diarrhea, is very lethargic, stops drinking water, or is vomiting water, take him into an ER vet immediately. I hope this helps!

I am so sorry that your pet Debo is having blood in his stool. If the blood has occurred more than a few times, or if she is in any way acting abnormal, then it is highly recommended to take her to your vet to get checked. Bloody stool can be caused by things like stress, intestinal parasites, diet change, or more serious things like a bleeding disorder, pancreatitis, etc. If the pet is ever acting ill and has blood, then this is considered to be an urgent matter in need of medical attention. You can try a propbiotic as well to help restore his normal bacterial flora. Over the counter Culturelle or Fortiflora purchased through Chewy.com can be used. The diarrhea and blood can be from the raw hide so I would avoid them in the future. If she is eating, bright and not vomiting you can wait until Monday. Other causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, other dietary indiscretions, toxin ingestion, pancreatitis, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new treat/table food/food. You can start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. I wish Luna the best!

This is usually dietary related and if no other signs are present at this stage, the problem could be managed by start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. If that is the case antibiotics may be needed. As long as Bo is behaving normally otherwise, you may be able to [manage her at home](https://www.petcoach.co/article/6-things-you-can-do-at-home-if-your-pet-has-diarrhea). I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours. Resume feeding a bland diet (boiled boneless/skinless chicken breast mixed with plain cooked white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount as long as she doesn't vomit. Feed the bland diet until the stool is consistently normal (usually several days), then transition slowly to the new diet over another 5-7 days. [Veterinary probiotics](https://www.petcoach.co/article/probiotics-and-prebiotics-bacteria-aren-t-all-bad) may be considered to promote gut health. If she continues to vomit and have diarrhea, or develops lethargy, loss of appetite, or abdominal pain in spite of a bland diet, she will need to see a vet as soon as possible.

The stool in the picture is diarrhea. Possible causes of bloody diarrhea after being spayed are: Effects of anesthesia and stress, from pain medications she received or is still on (Rimadyl, deramax, meloxicam....). Other causes: virla infection, food sensitivity, ate something gross outside, and toxin ingestion. I would call your Vet and tell them she is having bloody diarrhea and they will likely prescribe some medications to help. They may also tell you to stop any pain medications they sent home with her after the spay. You can start feeding her a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger mixed with rice. Feed about 1 cup per 10lbs per day until 1-2 normal stools. If she starts vomiting or doesn't want to eat or is lethargic she may need to be seen by your Vet. Good luck!
