My puppy has red poop. Is it an emergency if I can't get a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 3 months and 15 days old | 25 lbs

My puppy has red tinted poop- the last Petco Pet Education Center vet answered and said to take him to the vet immediately but they don’t have an appointment until Friday. Is this an emergency?

As long as Iggy is eating, drinking and acting normally, and is not having any profuse vomiting or diarrhea, this is not an emergency. Red-tinted stool typically occurs with irritation to the colon that can be caused by a variety of issues, like irritation from a virus, parasites or even bleeding disorders. While it's certainly worth having Iggy evaluated by his vet and having a stool sample checked for intestinal parasites, this isn't necessarily an emergency! I hope that all goes well!

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Iggy. I would be concerned that there is blood in his poop. It could be he has intestinal worms, as those are very common in puppies. I would have him checked out by a vet for this, as there can be very serious causes of blood in the poop like parvo. I'd take him into a vet today. I hope this helps!

That is a bit discolored! While some foods can cause a change in stool color (especially if they have food coloring/dyes), other things to look out for include issues such as irritation of the lower half of the GI tract (allergies, irritation, etc) or even some internal parasites. If you can directly connect it to eating something with dye, I would keep an eye on your pup and see if his stool returns to normal after a day or so. If he continues to have red colored stools, they worsen, or he shows any signs of illness (pain going potty, sore stomach, not wanting to eat or drink, vomiting, etc) I would have him examined by your vet right away.

My dog is peeing blood and pooping blood. Is this an emergency?

Reasons for blood in the stool include colitis, intestinal parasites and dietary indiscretion and some possible reasons of blood in the urine include urinary tract infections, urinary stones and even tumors. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly. My 6-month puppy has runny poop and a drop of blood. Should I worry?

Luke's runny poop could be caused by intestinal worms (if he's not up to date with his deworming treatments), or it could be a GI illness or he ate something rotten. The drop of blood in his poop could due to to irritation of the GI tract from the diarrhea. Since's his poop is normal now, just keep an eye on him for now. If you keep seeing blood in his poop or he has runny poops, I'd take him into the vet. I hope this helps!

My dog is pooping bright red blood. Is it serious? What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Miki! Blood in the diarrhea indicates inflammation with in the colon. It isn't uncommon for a dog with severe diarrhea or diarrhea for a few days to develop blood in the stool. The blood can cause significant dehydration so it is important to make sure he isn't very lethargic and it drinking. If the diarrhea is severe (accidents in the house, can't hold it and asking to go out often) then I recommend fasting him for 12-24 hours. Do not limit water. This will allow his GI tract to calm down. Then restart feeding with a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. If he is very lethargic, starts vomiting and will not eat or drink he should be seen by a Vet today. Otherwise you can do the above and have him seen, if needed, by your Vet when they open. It indicates inflammation in the colon. Causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites (so bring fresh stool sample), viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), HGE (hemorrhagic gastro-enteritis), pancreatitis, food allergy or intolerance, reaction to a new treat/food/table food. My puppy's poop is bloody, gooey, grey, and watery. What should I do?

The most common reason that we will see soft stool (with or without blood or mucous in it) in a puppy is some type of intestinal parasite. You didn't mention how old Ivy is or if your vet has checked a stool sample, but puppies can commonly have intestinal parasites. Some are microscopic, so the only way to know that they have them is for your vet to look under the microscope. And even if a puppy has been dewormed, it is common for them to have other intestinal parasites since there are no many different types of parasites and they each require a specific type of deworming. So, my first recommendation is to have your veterinarian do a fecal check on Ivy, then decide on an other treatment. Sometimes puppies need a probiotic for their intestinal tract depending on their age and diet history, so be sure to talk to your veterinarian about that as well. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
