My Goldendoodle puppy has red marks and scabs. Should I see the vet?

He may have a condition called puppy pyoderma that is roughly equivalent to acne in humans. They usually will outgrow it over time but some get it worse than others and need some medications and possibly therapeutic baths to help them get over it. I suggest getting him seen by your vet to make sure that's what is going on or if he has some other kind of skin condition that may require different treatment. Your vet will do an exam, possibly collect some cells for examination under the microscope and based on these result will be better able to tell you what is going on and how best to treat it.

This looks like it could be a very mild skin infection or what is sometimes called puppy pyoderma. It's similar to acne in people and most puppies will have a mild case and outgrow it. It could also be a small abrasion or bite from and insect or other pet. Keep an eye on it and you may consider bathing him with a mild, oatmeal based puppy shampoo to help soothe his skin. If the area spreads, gets red, starts oozing, or if your puppy has any other adverse symptoms, get him in to see your vet.

Depending on the age of the pups there could be several things going on. Commonly puppies can get skin infections or an infection from a skin mite called demodex. The scabs could also be caused from the puppies playing and nipping at each other. I would recommend taking the pups in to be evaluated by a vet so an infection can be ruled out. If they do have an infection they will likely need some antibiotics to help clear it up since their immune system has not fully developed.

Dogs don't necessarily get heat rashes; however this is a bacterial infection of the skin which can be caused by flea allergies, puppy strangles, or contact dermatitis. As long as Broccoli is eating well, normal activity level, and otherwise fine, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It likely can be resolved with some antibiotics and topical treatment from your vet. You can bathe him in a puppy oatmeal or aloe based shampoo for now, until you can get Broccoli seen by your vet and appropriately treated. Poor Odyssi! The red pimple-like lesions that you are seeing could be related to a skin infection or contact reaction to insect bites (mosquitoes, fleas, etc.). A trip to the vet is in order to further assess these lesions, as antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications are likely needed. At this point, make sure that she is receiving a high quality flea and tick preventative (such as Nexgard, Bravecto or Advantix) regularly. You can also bathe her in a gentle oatmeal-based shampoo (unless you are using topical flea control). If Odyssi seems overly itchy, put an e-collar (cone) on her until her vet appointment. A vet’s visit would be best to determine whether the yellow scab are from dermatitis/pyoderma which is a fairly common skin infection. A Medicated shampoo such as Malaseb (available on PetCo.com, chewy.com, 1800Petmeds) that contains chlorhexidine and ketoconazole that is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-seborrheal (will help remove greasy flakes) used to shampoo the belly 2-3 times a week for 2-3 weeks, leaving the suds on 5-10 min prior to rinsing for optimal efficacy may be helpful. (Towel dry but never use a hair dryer on a puppy to avoid burns.) An in person physical exam would still be advisable as other skin conditions such as ringworm can possibly present as yellow flakes and would likely require more than Malaseb shampoo to treat. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From what I can tell via your photo, this looks a lot like puppy pyoderma-a very common condition among young dogs. Essentially, these are "pimples" for puppies and usually caused by staph bacteria. I will usually try to rule out any underlying flea problem resulting in pustules, etc when I see these patients. If I see nothing else of concern I will usually prescribe antibiotics for 10-14 days at which point the breakout has usually cleared up. I would recommend seeing your vet to do these things as well-Lala will be much more comfortable without pustules. I hope this helps!
