Are red bumps and scabs on newborn puppies a skin infection?

Dogs don't necessarily get heat rashes; however this is a bacterial infection of the skin which can be caused by flea allergies, puppy strangles, or contact dermatitis. As long as Broccoli is eating well, normal activity level, and otherwise fine, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It likely can be resolved with some antibiotics and topical treatment from your vet. You can bathe him in a puppy oatmeal or aloe based shampoo for now, until you can get Broccoli seen by your vet and appropriately treated. This can be caused by a localized skin infection, an infestation with mites or fleas, or even an allergic reaction. It is likely that these conditions may be causing Hump to be itchy, and she may be having these scabs from scratching. A vet can perform some tests including blood work, and taking some samples from Hump's skin to figure out what is going on and prescribe an appropriate treatment plan. I hope this helps!

It looks like Bruno has a skin infection. Parasites like mites and fleas can cause irritation of the skin that can lead to bacterial infections. If he has not had skin scrapings performed to look for mites, that would be my recommendation. If there are no mites, and he has been treated for fleas, then perhaps the topical medications he is on are not enough, and he needs an oral antibiotic to control the infection. I hope this helps. It is possible that they are small wounds/ scabs from the puppies playing rough with each other. I commonly see play wounds on puppies. I would guess from your description that these might either be from a bacterial skin infection like puppy pyoderma, or folliculitis. Both of these problems will sometimes resolve without treatment if they are mild enough. I would not recommend picking at any skin lesion. If they are not resolving in the next week or so, or if Hummel seems itchy or begins losing hair I’d recommend seeing your veterinarian.

Scabs can be from a number of things including some minor skin irritation or injury that is healing. Puppy nails are very sharp, so it is possible a litter mate may have accidentally scratched your pup's head. As long as puppy is eating and acting normally, it is a good idea to just keep an eye on the spot and see if it heals. If the puppy appears sick, the area worsens, or it doesn't heal up, having a vet take a look at it is best as it could indicate a possible skin infection, or parasites that may be causing irritation.

The bumps are most likely due to a bacterial skin infection based on your description. These infections usually happen due to some irritation or excessive moisture on the skin. It's best to have a veterinarian look at this, so they can determine what treatment is necessary and possibly find the inciting cause. You can help the infection right now by giving her a bath with medicated shampoo (you can find this at the pet store). Gently massage the shampoo into the skin for 15 minutes and rinse well after bathing. The bath can be repeated every day until the infection starts to clear, then can be reduced to once a week.
