My puppy has red bumps, scabs, and hair loss. Is it skin infection?

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 8 days old | 6 lbs

I noticed on my pug puppy that his forehead was red for about a week, then I noticed his hair was thinning out. Now he has alot of bumps on his head, some with scabs and I can see some look like pimples with puss inside them.he has a rash right behind his right front foot also. Could this be a heat rash? I'm scheduled to take him to the vet, but I'm just so worried, what could it be?

Dogs don't necessarily get heat rashes; however this is a bacterial infection of the skin which can be caused by flea allergies, puppy strangles, or contact dermatitis. As long as Broccoli is eating well, normal activity level, and otherwise fine, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It likely can be resolved with some antibiotics and topical treatment from your vet.
You can bathe him in a puppy oatmeal or aloe based shampoo for now, until you can get Broccoli seen by your vet and appropriately treated. I hope that your fur baby gets his skin issues resolved soon! Best wishes and take care.

I recommend getting him seen by your vet for a dermatological exam. He could have a bacterial or fungal infection, but it could be a form of mange as well, and if so, will need more than medicated baths to heal his skin. Your vet will do some labwork, probably including a skin scrape, in which they take a dulled scalpel blade and carefully scrape the lesions to get a sample of skin cells and debris to look at under the microscope. I've seen quite a few pit bulls with mange and he's the right age for it to start showing up. It will flare up as they age and hormonal changes trigger outbreaks. Based on the results of the exam, your vet will be better able to tell you what is going on and how best to treat his condition.

If he has not had skin scrapings performed to look for mites, that would be my recommendation. Are red bumps and scabs on newborn puppies a skin infection?

Depending on the age of the pups there could be several things going on. Commonly puppies can get skin infections or an infection from a skin mite called demodex. The scabs could also be caused from the puppies playing and nipping at each other. I would recommend taking the pups in to be evaluated by a vet so an infection can be ruled out. If they do have an infection they will likely need some antibiotics to help clear it up since their immune system has not fully developed.

This can be caused by a localized skin infection, an infestation with mites or fleas, or even an allergic reaction. It is likely that these conditions may be causing Hump to be itchy, and she may be having these scabs from scratching. My dog has a rash with pus bumps and scabs. Is it an infection?

The bumps are most likely due to a bacterial skin infection based on your description. These infections usually happen due to some irritation or excessive moisture on the skin. It's best to have a veterinarian look at this, so they can determine what treatment is necessary and possibly find the inciting cause. You can help the infection right now by giving her a bath with medicated shampoo (you can find this at the pet store). Gently massage the shampoo into the skin for 15 minutes and rinse well after bathing. The bath can be repeated every day until the infection starts to clear, then can be reduced to once a week. To me is sounds like Broodie may have a skin infection known as bacterial dermatitis. This can be caused secondarily by allergies, mite infestations, flea problems, and food allergies. It would be best to take Broodie to your veterinarian so that she can be examined and if necessary, treatments like antibiotics can be started. Why does my puppy have red, scabby lumps after running in grass?

It is most likely a superficial pyoderma. This is a skin infection. Dogs can get this from allergies and skin irritation. I recommend trying a medicated shampoo with anti histamine. However if they are not improving I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian for antibiotics.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Marlo. His belly looks very inflamed and is likely itchy. It is always a good idea to take a new puppy to a veterinarian when you first obtain him. He will need to be examined, started on his vaccinations and deworming. The rash can be addressed as well. It could be a mild allergic reaction, impetigo or even an overgrowth of a mite known as Demodex. The veterinarian will guide you as far as any testing or treatment needed. In the meantime, I recommend bathing him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula for puppies to soothe the skin. I hope this information helps!
