My new puppy has red bumps and is scratching. What should I do?

Poor Tank! That rash looks pretty severe. It could be something like an allergic reaction, scabies, flea allergy or a severe case of puppy pyoderma. Because there are several conditions that can look like this and they all require different treatment, I recommend to take Tank in to see his veterinarian. The doctor will examine him and try to determine the cause for all those lesions. It’s likely he will get an anti-inflammatory and antibiotics. Congratulations on adding Carter to your family! Those spots on Carter could be several things including fleas, allergies, skin mites, bacterial infection, ringworm (which humans can get) or endocrine disease. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can treat for fleas. Your veterinarian carries the best products but if you need an OTC recommendation, stick with Frontline. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions once a day (not his whole body, just the lesions). Also protect the area from trauma by having your pup wear an elizabethan collar at all times. If the lesions do not start improving within a week or if they are getting worse, have him examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Poor Odyssi! The red pimple-like lesions that you are seeing could be related to a skin infection or contact reaction to insect bites (mosquitoes, fleas, etc.). A trip to the vet is in order to further assess these lesions, as antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications are likely needed. At this point, make sure that she is receiving a high quality flea and tick preventative (such as Nexgard, Bravecto or Advantix) regularly. You can also bathe her in a gentle oatmeal-based shampoo (unless you are using topical flea control). If Odyssi seems overly itchy, put an e-collar (cone) on her until her vet appointment. I do recommend all new lumps or bumps be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine if they are potentially malignant (cancerous) or not. In the picture, it appears that the affected skin is bumpy and then there is quite a bit of redness around the edge. It’s possible that it could be a wart-like growth, but because of the amount of inflammation (causing the redness) going on, I would recommend taking Mac to the vet for a closer look. The vet will also look closely at all of Mac’s other skin (and mouth and other mucous membranes) to see if there are any other affected areas. They may be able to diagnose or have a better guess as to what’s going on, and discuss treatment options if any need to happen. Until he sees the vet, it would be helpful to have him wear an e-collar/cone so he can’t lick the area anymore. Licking will increase the inflammation and can skew how the vet evaluates the area. It could be that Harley Moon has an allergic reaction to something outside, could have ringworm, or it could be puppy pyoderma (a skin infection). It's a very good idea to have this seen by a vet this week, and for now, keep an eye on her. If it appears to be itching her, you can can give her an oatmeal bath to see if that helps soothe her skin. I'd also put an Ecollar on her if she starts licking at it. You can make one at home or you can buy one at a pet store. I hope this helps!
