My dog has a red rash and bump. What is it and what to do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 4 days old | 46 lbs

I just noticed this red rash like area on my dog and also a red bump that’s looks similar to a bite mark. Any idea what this looks like? She has vet appointment this Saturday for a check up but is there anything I can do about it until then?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. It could be that Harley Moon has an allergic reaction to something outside, could have ringworm, or it could be puppy pyoderma (a skin infection). It's a very good idea to have this seen by a vet this week, and for now, keep an eye on her. If it appears to be itching her, you can can give her an oatmeal bath to see if that helps soothe her skin. I'd also put an Ecollar on her if she starts licking at it. You can make one at home or you can buy one at a pet store. I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Harley. The pictures came through kind of blurry, but she does appear to have a rash. A common cause this time of year is seasonal allergies. You can try bathing her with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to help soothe the skin. If this does not resolve the issue, then you should take her to see her veterinarian. She may need an antibiotic if there is an infection or an anti-itch medication. I hope this information helps!

If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This does not appear to be an emergency. This can be caused by a localized skin infection, an infestation with mites or fleas, or even an allergic reaction. It is likely that these conditions may be causing Hump to be itchy, and she may be having these scabs from scratching. A vet can perform some tests including blood work, and taking some samples from Hump's skin to figure out what is going on and prescribe an appropriate treatment plan. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to recommend any drug, including OTC drugs, without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your dog. I would take Harley into your vet. The vet can confirm that he is suffering an allergic reaction, and can give him an antihistamine or steroid to treat it.

Why does my 6-month puppy have red dots and bumps on her skin?

I am so sorry Pretty Girl is going through this. On her belly it looks like a little skin infection but on her side it looks like hives. If this just started today I would take her to an emergency veterinarian for a possible allergic reaction. If this has been going on for a few days call your regular veterinarian tomorrow. If you wait then during the night if the bumps that look like hives get worse, her face swells or she has difficulty breathing then take her to an emergency veterinarian asap. My dog has a red, itchy bump. Why is he biting and licking it?

Hello. Is it possible that Charlie was bitten by something like a tick? This just looks like an acute inflammatory reaction. If you have some hydrocortisone cream, I would just rub a bit into the skin several times a day. If you do not have any cream, then please visit your Petco who will have several brands, including Zymox which is a very good product.
