Is it safe to vaccinate my puppy for rabies again if unsure?

I would try to get as much information from the previous owner as possible. If they don’t have any records maybe they remember the name of the veterinarian they took him to and you can call for that information? If you can not get any vaccination documents then I would be much more inclined to vaccinate him again rather than risk no vaccinations. Bordetella vaccine can be given to puppies from 8 weeks of age. The rabies vaccine will have to be repeated at 12 to 16 weeks (depending on your state's law) as maternal antibodies will destroy it and your puppy will not develop an immunity against rabies at this age. It is unlikely that your puppy will have any detrimental effect from those vaccines given at the age of 8 weeks. Whether the bordetella vaccine needs to be given again will depend on the type and brand of the vaccine. I suggest you follow the advice of your veterinarian. Accidents like this can happen, and it is likely that the tech who filled out your initial admission made a mistake when entering the information in the computer. This does not mean your vet is a bad vet.

If you can’t get ahold of the original owner, then no there’s nothing a vet can do to verify Charlie has had his rabies vaccine. To be honest, if they are claiming they lost the records, I would assume he hadn’t gotten any vaccines at all. The vet who gives the vaccines keeps records, so the original owners could have contacted the vet to get their copy. I would advise getting Charlie his DHPPi as well as rabies. I hope this helps.

Since it is a "new" pup, he should be examined by your veterinarian to confirm good health or to diagnose and treat any preexisting conditions. If he is due the rabies shot regardless of other vaccination history you could go ahead and get it. You can ask the vet to leave some space on he vaccine card before recording the rabies so they can add the previous vaccines when the history arrives.
