Should my adopted dog get a rabies shot if I don't have his records?

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 90 lbs

We've adopted a dog who's 18 months old. He was originally adopted from the local shelter when he was 4 months old. I can't get his shot records, because they'll only give them to the original owner (who may be able to get them for us). My question is, it seems like he's do for a rabies shot regardless. Should I wait for the papers or just get the sit at my vet? He needs them for obedience classes in 2 weeks.

If he is due the rabies shot regardless of other vaccination history you could go ahead and get it. You can ask the vet to leave some space on he vaccine card before recording the rabies so they can add the previous vaccines when the history arrives.

To be honest, if they are claiming they lost the records, I would assume he hadn’t gotten any vaccines at all. If you can find out where Candle was adopted from, you could contact the shelter and they should have records of when Candle was vaccinated. Otherwise I suggest you take her to your vet and discuss this with him. He may be able to find out also, or will recommend a vaccination schedule that will fit with Candles condition and age.

Adopted dog, no vet records. Can I get them or re-vaccinate my puppy?

In most cases, you'll need owner permission in order for records to be transferred over, so while you can contact the vet, you may not be able to obtain full records. That said, they may at least be able to confirm neuter/vaccine status for you so you can let your vet know. If you can't get any records, you can also have your current vet perform a titer test to see where Wooly's immunity levels are, and then booster vaccines from there.

How to know if my adopted dog has all her necessary vaccines?

I would be suspicious that if the person you adopted Lucy from didn't give you those other vaccine records that she has not had them. They should have been included with her rabies record. You can ask that person for them, or for permission to speak to the vet who administered the rabies vaccines to see if she received her other vaccines. If they refuse to give you that information, it's likely she hasn't had her other vaccines, and I would take Lucy into the vet to have them done.

Just adopted a puppy with no vaccine records. Should I get him shots?

I would recommend getting his vaccinations redone if there is no proof. It will not harm him and this will ensure he is fully protected. It is just too risky to assume he is protected with no proof. He will need the DHLPP and Bordetella. He will then need 1 booster done in 3 weeks and that will fully protect him for a year. I hope that your newly adopted pet Tanner does well moving forward. No - it will not hurt her and I would definitely recommend getting her vaccinated! There are many dogs in shelters who get their vaccines as adults. Some core vaccines like the DAP combo might require a booster while others like rabies don’t.

Unsure about my adopted dog's past vaccines. Can I get them redone?

I would not rely upon this person having given the vaccines properly nor that the feed store kept the so-called cooling chain, ie that the vaccine did not get warm somewhere along the way and became useless. I suggest you start from the beginning. Take your dog to your vet for a basic exam to make sure she is healthy, and have her vaccinated as per recommendation of your vet. Also discuss having her spayed if you do not want to breed her.
