My puppy pees outside then inside. Could it be a UTI at 9 weeks?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 10 lbs

I'm concerned my puppy might have a UTI. He will pee outside once or twice then come inside and pee again or he will pee inside then a few minutes later go again. Is this possible? He is 9 weeks old. Recently had his first shots and dewormed.

It is possible that Koa has a urinary tract infection. But at her young age it could just be that she is not sufficiently potty trained yet (which is normal for a pup her age). I would recommend having her checked by the vet. They will likely want to do a urinalysis to look for an infection.

Sterile cystitis (inflammation without bacteria present) can occur sometimes. I would see how Korra does on the medication and after the course of meds is done schedule a recheck UA to see if the blood and inflammation have resolved. If her symptoms continue, worsen, or the UA shows no changes, investigating for other causes behind it with additional tests such as ultrasound or X-rays may help determine what is going on.

Sometimes, tumors or cysts can cause bladder irritation, however, these are less common in very young dogs. Diet can also play a factor, so if no other apparent causes are found, trying an inflammation-friendly food from your vet may be a good option.

14 weeks is very young to be fully house trained. The best thing to do is have a urine sample checked by your vet. If there is an infection then it can cause these symptoms and you will need antibiotics to fix this. If there urine is normal, then it is just behavioral and training problems associated with his age.

My puppy pees while sleeping. Is it a UTI or other medical issue?

Hi, puppies can get urinary tract infections. I would watch her for urinating more frequently and in small amounts. At 7 months, she should be mostly house trained so this is not likely a behavior issue but it is still possible. I would take her to the vet for an exam if it happens a third time. They can put her on some antibiotics for this and she should be fine. Good luck!

If she continues this behavior, she will need to see a veterinarian to see if she has a urinary tract infection. It is a more likely condition in a female pup given their anatomy. While it is normal (although frustrating) to have “good” days and “bad” days while house training a puppy, the episodes you describe may be an indication of something more serious, such as a UTI. This is definitely possible if Phoebe is straining to urinate, urinating small amounts, or has reddish colored urine and if you notice her licking her vagina more frequently. If these signs continue, she should definitely be seen by a vet as soon as possible. I hope all is well!

Some puppies are just fascinated by water and drink constantly regardless of thirst. The 25 ounces is about double what Wallace needs per day, dog’s typically drink 1-2 ounces per pound. You should have him seen by a vet to rule out a UTI, kidney disease, or very rare forms of diabetes. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you have!
