Why is my puppy peeing tiny amounts constantly but seems fine?

Pet's info: Dog | Rhodesian Ridgeback | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 2 days old | 11 lbs

Hi there, My 8 week old rhodesian/heeler female puppy has been peeing every 10 minutes today.. She only pees a small amount and doesn't have any other symptoms (ie. lethargic, diarrhea, vomiting, etc.). She is being very playful and energetic but is spotting pee all over the house constantly. Thoughts??

She may have a urinary infection or a puppy vaginitis. I recommend having a urinalysis done and an exam to see if there is a medical problem. Puppies do urinate frequently but if this is abnormal for her then please get treatment so it doesn’t worsen. Usually a course of oral antibiotics will be prescribed. It is not normal for puppies to have liquid diarrhea and urinate very frequently. There is some aspect of training that goes along with the urinating but not so frequently. I would recommend bringing Nemo to a veterinarian. They can deworm her, give medication to resolve the diarrhea and discuss diet changes to help with the diarrhea. They may also want to test her for viruses that can cause diarrhea. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

That is a lot of urinating in a short period of time. Nemo is very young at just 5 weeks of age and puppies do urinate more than adults but that is excessive. What is she drinking and eating? I would be sure you are feeding canned puppy food at this point and try to wean off any dairy, milk or puppy formula. If she continues to urinate this much you should try to collect a urine sample and have Nemo seen by a Vet.

I would also recommend initiating a bland diet of chicken and rice and adding in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora. Sometimes a second course of dewormer is needed or a different dewormer is needed for treatment. With parasites, inflammation can result leading to diarrhea and soft stool and sometimes a bland diet or sensitive stomach is needed short term. I hope this helps! Maisy may have a urinary tract infection or she may have a congenital defect with in her urinary system (ectopic ureter). Your puppy may have a urinary tract infection. Since puppies can deteriorate very quickly (they heal quickly as well), I suggest you make an appointment with your veterinarian. He may need to be prescribed antibiotics and pain medicine.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! What you are seeing is likely mucous. It could be a urinary tract infection of puppy vaginitis. They tend to grow out of puppy vaginitis. Sometimes they need antibiotics if they are urinating small amounts frequently. I would set up an appointment with your Vet for an exam. I would try to collect a urine sample for the appointment. First wipe the vulva with a baby wipe or a slightly soapy towel (rinse) before collecting. I hope this helps!

Oh my. Poor puppy. Female puppies are high risk for getting urinary tract infections and his causes frequent urination, foul smelling urine, and accidents in the home. This is likely what is going on with Hazel. She needs to be seen by your local vet for a urinalysis (urine test) and oral antibiotics if confirmed. She also sounds like she has an upper respiratory infection as well. Both issues can respond to the same antibiotic medication so schedule an appt with your local vet soon to get her the proper treatment. Puppy dribbles pee, has accidents, UTI meds not working. What to do?

If the antibiotics didn't make much difference, I'd be suspicious of puppy vaginitis, which is a relatively common inflammatory condition that can lead to accidents and sometimes make them more susceptible to urinary infections. It generally resolves with age. I would also check for a stricture (this may require sedation as they don't love vaginal palpation...). For now, since your vet hasn't been able to check a urinalysis, that would be the first priority. See if you can get a sample- sneak a small container under her when she squats. If you have to hold onto the sample a few hours before dropping it at your vet, stick it in the fridge, but the fresher the better. If you're having no luck, your vet can collect a sterile sample via cystocentesis. Hope this helps.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Hazel. Anytime you acquire a new pet, it is important to have an examination by a veterinarian. A urine sample can be tested at this time. It can be hard to differentiate puppy behavior from disease without testing the urine. Based on these results, medication can be prescribed if a urinary tract infection is found. Rarely puppies will have congenital disorders causing the urine to leak. This is rare though. I hope this information helps!
