My puppy's peeing inside after new medication. Is this normal?

Urinary incontinence is a common problem in older spayed female dogs. Your veterinarian can prescribe medication to control this. I’m glad you’ve checked her urine and since it was negative then starting her on medication for incontinence is the next step. If the antibiotics didn't make much difference, I'd be suspicious of puppy vaginitis, which is a relatively common inflammatory condition that can lead to accidents and sometimes make them more susceptible to urinary infections. It generally resolves with age. I would also check for a stricture (this may require sedation as they don't love vaginal palpation...). For now, since your vet hasn't been able to check a urinalysis, that would be the first priority. See if you can get a sample- sneak a small container under her when she squats. If you have to hold onto the sample a few hours before dropping it at your vet, stick it in the fridge, but the fresher the better. If you're having no luck, your vet can collect a sterile sample via cystocentesis. Hope this helps.

By medications, I am assuming you mean medications for incontinence. There are several medications available to treat this problem, and some patients will respond to a different type than the one they are currently on. You may also be able to increase the dose of the current medication, or give it more frequently. If Katie has not been evaluated for other possible urinary issues with your vet, it may be a good idea. She may have been misdiagnosed as urinary incontinent when in fact she may have urinary bladder stones, kidney disease, UTI, or a congenital defect causing urine to leak (like an ectopic ureter). If by medications you were not referring to those for incontinence, then she may be urinating frequently as a side effect of those medications. Incontinence medications may help with this issue. With either scenario, I would recommend that Katie see a vet for evaluation and possible medication adjustment.

It's possible she just got wrapped up in the moment of playing and then suddenly had the urge to urinate without bothering to ask to be let outside. Dogs sometimes exhibit odd behavior like this such as urinating on beds, couches, etc. I would advise just monitoring her for any signs that her urinary problems are returning. Sometimes urinary problems can be seen but the urinalysis is essentially normal, like in her repeat urinalysis. Watch for signs of increased thirst, increased urination, frequent urination, straining, and inappropriate urination. If these occur she may have a recurrence of the problem despite a fairly normal urinalysis. I hope this was an isolated incident and she doesn't relapse in her house training due to a urinary issue. Hi, puppies can get urinary tract infections. I would watch her for urinating more frequently and in small amounts. At 7 months, she should be mostly house trained so this is not likely a behavior issue but it is still possible. I would take her to the vet for an exam if it happens a third time. They can put her on some antibiotics for this and she should be fine. Good luck!

It is important to differentiate between a medical problem and her learning how to be potty trained. A behavioral problem is most common at her age, but I do see urinary tract infections as well as congenital disorders. I hope this information helps!

Hypoglycemia can be life threatening. I hope she has recovered now. To keep this from occurring again it is recommended to give her Nutri-cal supplements every 4-6 hrs in between meals An illness like this can understandably set back a pet in their house training. So go back to your basics with her training. Taking her outside regularly (a puppy has to urinate for every month old they are plus one in hours, so a 4 month old puppy can hold their bladder for 4+1=5 hrs at a time), reward her when she goes outside, and learn to tune into her cues that she has to go. Also it is best to crate train her and keep her inside a crate (only big enough for her to turn around in to discourage her from eliminating in the crate) when you are not home to supervise her and also at night. She should be back to normal elimination soon enough. Also make sure that you are paying attention to how often she is urinating. If she is going more than once every hour then there is a good chance she has a UTI. Also the urine can have a foul odor to it. If this is the case then she needs antibiotics from your vet to clear up the infection, which should in turn decrease her urinary accidents in the home.
