My dog is incontinent, on meds, still needs a diaper. What can I do?

Hi there! Sorry to hear Missy is having accidents. There certainly are medications to help with this. Usually older spayed female dogs are the ones who have these issues-due to estrogen dependent urinary incontinence. Your veterinarian will have to see Missy for an exam and probably blood work to make sure the medications are safe for her. Incuran and Proin are two frequently prescribed medications for these issues and it is usually by preference of the doctor which one is prescribed. Usually they work quite well, and most dogs take them easily with a small snack. I hope this helps!

There are drugs that can be given to Layla to help with her incontinence. Medications often effectively manage this condition, and helps prevent accidents. Phenylpropanolamine helps strengthen the urethral sphincter, or there hormone treatment is another drug option. If medications do not work, surgery may be considered. I would speak to your vet about seeing if medications would be a good option for Layla to help her with her incontinence.

You are correct, Proin and DES are both medications that are commonly used to treat urinary incontinence in dogs. However, its possible that urinary tract infections, bladder stones, or bladder tumors could also cause these symptoms. Therefore, a visit to your vet for at least a urinalysis (urine test) is indicated. If no cause is found, then medication such as DES or Proin can be prescribed by your veterinarian. Antihistamines will have a significant effect on urination in dogs. Yes, all medications can have side effects and can be ineffective or even dangerous if given in the wrong situations. Your vet will likely want to run a urine test to rule out complications such as diabetes, infection, inflammation or even bladder tumours which could be triggering the reduced bladder control and if all is clear they can then prescribe medication to help reduce the leaking if it is simple incontinence

I'm sorry to hear that Bijou has developed some leaking. Unfortunately we do see that in a number of spayed females. Proin is one of the most common medications that we will use for urinary incontinence, but there are several others that you can try as well. Hello. I am so sorry that no one has addressed your question earlier. Your veterinarians have done an excellent work-up to rule out any underlying conditions or issues so far, but have they been able to rule out the possibility that Cali has ectopic ureters or something else congenital like urethral hypoplasia or just plain congenital incontinence? Medically, you might discuss the use of Incurin ( estriol ) either by itself or added to the Proin. If there is no response to either/both of these together, there is some literature that indicates that GnRH ( gonadotropin releasing hormone ) may be effective. If Cali remains medically unresponsive, then there is a surgical procedure to implant a hydraulic urethral occluder. Your veterinarian will probably not be able to do this, but if you are near a veterinary teaching hospital, that would be a good place to have this done. Your veterinarian can research this for you.
