My puppy pees too much after pad training. Is he sick or wants treats?

Hi there and thank you for using PetCoach to address your concern. Bo is still quite young and him urinating inside is something that he should eventually grow out with training. Positive reinforcement with treats whenever he urinates outside and defecates outside will help reinforce him going outside. I've had great success with recommending Fresh Patch. This is a patch of grass in a cardboard box with absorbent material underneath the grass and you place this in the house. Bo will use this real grass to go to the bathroom short term. I would recommend starting by placing the grass in the area where he has been urinating and then gradually moving the patch of grass closer and closer to the door to the outside until eventually the grass patch is outside of the house and he is using it there. AT Dante's age, you shoudl start decreasing the amount of puppy milk and increasing the amount of food. He should be fully weaned by 8 weeks of age so milk is no longer needed. I do recommend to have his urine checked for any infection. Puppies do urinate frequently but they typically just go in one large pee puddle. Not several smaller puddles. Hello Diane. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You didn't mention if this was a new problem or a lifelong problem. Has she ever been completely housebroken? If this is a relatively new problem, Nikki may have an underlying medical condition - like a urinary tract infection. I suggest you have her examined by your vet and have a urine test done to check for infection or other underlying medical problem. If you can rule out a medical problem then you can assume it is behavioral, in which case, you should consult with a professional, in-home dog trainer. It is very hard to potty train a dog this age without professional help.

If Oreo is doing it in the same spot and smells before doing it, I would say this is a training problem rather than a medical issue. If it was a medical issue, I would expect it would be in more random places. Try taking him out more often during the day, and after every meal. Stay with him outside until he goes. Now if this doesn't help the issue, he starts urinating all over the house, you see blood in his urine, and/or he becomes lethargic, then I would be concerned it is a medical issue. At that point, take him into the vet. Best of luck.

Hypoglycemia can be life threatening. I hope she has recovered now. To keep this from occurring again it is recommended to give her Nutri-cal supplements every 4-6 hrs in between meals An illness like this can understandably set back a pet in their house training. So go back to your basics with her training. Taking her outside regularly (a puppy has to urinate for every month old they are plus one in hours, so a 4 month old puppy can hold their bladder for 4+1=5 hrs at a time), reward her when she goes outside, and learn to tune into her cues that she has to go. Also it is best to crate train her and keep her inside a crate (only big enough for her to turn around in to discourage her from eliminating in the crate) when you are not home to supervise her and also at night. She should be back to normal elimination soon enough. Also make sure that you are paying attention to how often she is urinating. If she is going more than once every hour then there is a good chance she has a UTI. Also the urine can have a foul odor to it. If this is the case then she needs antibiotics from your vet to clear up the infection, which should in turn decrease her urinary accidents in the home.

If you are using both potty pads and going outside Totoro is likely confused. If he successfully goes potty outside, then I would move him outside if you catch him in an accident so he can finish there. As puppies tend to take a little longer before they realize they need to go or make a connection between outside and going, you will need to give Totoro enough time outside to go potty, which means making time for him even if you are "time limited", or having a friend take him out when you can't.

I’m sorry to hear about Bruno! I am concerned that he might have developed a urinary tract infection. There is one medication (prednisone/prednisolone) they can caused increased urination and drinking but those should stop as soon as the medication was stopped. The UTI may be even more likely if he’s recently hurt his back or neck because they tend not to posture/squat all the way or for long enough when it hurts. So they hold their urine longer than they might otherwise do or don’t empty their bladder fully. These can predispose to UTI. Take Bruno (and a urine sample if you can catch one) in to the vet to do a urine test and get on antibiotics if that’s what it turns out to be. The urine test will also screen for other causes of accidents like diabetes and kidney disease. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Bruno!
