What if I'm a few minutes late giving my puppy's parvo shot?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered

I am giving my puppy shots for possibly Parvo..l am supposed to give him the shot at the EXACT time not a minute before or late for three days..l was STUPID yesterday and didn't look at the clock..we THINK it was around 7:05..will it hurt him to give him shot at 7:05? Please help me

It's difficult for me to say for sure without knowing the medication in the shot you are giving, but I can't think of any shot that requires that amount of exactness in the timing. Usually shots meant for parvo patients have a margin of a few hours where it wouldn't be unsafe, or decrease the effectiveness of the treatment. If you think that you are less than an hour off, then I would not be concerned. However, again, I would have to see the medication to be sure of this.

If you can post the question again with the exact medication name and/or a picture, I can give a more certain response.

I am so sorry that your puppy has parvovirus. If you don't feel comfortable administering the shot that is ok. You can certainly wait the 6 hrs and have your vet do this later today. This is understandable. Then discuss with your vet about an alternative route (by mouth) or just going in to have the vet administer it daily. My dog's yearly shots are delayed. Will he get sick or be okay?

Hi, as an adult dog this should not be the first vaccines he has gotten. If these are his second boosters, they need to be done at a certain time to be effective. if he has had vaccines in the past and these are his yearly vaccines, they should be effective until you are able to take him on the 24th. The vet may suggest a booster in 3 weeks if they are late, but that should not effect him. He will not get sick. it is very common for dogs to not have a full appetite when their owners are gone, but I would have him checked during his vaccine appointment. Good luck!

My dog missed parvo booster. Is it too late for the vaccine?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is never too late! Get the booster done. Being late on the booster just means she may need an additional booster. But hat depends on HOW late you are, if it is just a week or 2 probably not. If it is months then I would give her an extra one 3 weeks later. It is better to be safe! I wish you and Layla the best!

My dog had a parvo vaccine gap. Is she safe around a new puppy?

It would be safer to give Mocha another dose of parvo vaccine, about 3-4 weeks after the one she just had. That will make sure that she is fully protected and she is not any danger for the new puppy.

Yes, a third booster is required within the appropriate time line (2-4 weeks). Vaccines must be given in certain time frames to ensure they are effective. Vaccines given too late will not be effective. It's better to play it safe than risk disease. One gentle reminder, the vast majority of veterinarian are not out to make money. No, it’s not too late and you should start those vaccines ASAP. Parvovirus is highly contagious and is devastating. The vaccine is highly effective but must follow a strict protocol.
