Is it safe to delay my dog's parvo shot for 6 hours until the vet?

It's difficult for me to say for sure without knowing the medication in the shot you are giving, but I can't think of any shot that requires that amount of exactness in the timing. Usually shots meant for parvo patients have a margin of a few hours where it wouldn't be unsafe, or decrease the effectiveness of the treatment. If you think that you are less than an hour off, then I would not be concerned. However, again, I would have to see the medication to be sure of this. Parvo is actually a virus so antibiotics will not prevent it, and the antibiotics we use in dogs who are suffering from clinical parvo are treating secondary infections. I would get him in to have his shots as soon as possible (though he still won't be fully protected until he has had a full series of puppy shots, every 3-4 weeks until 16 to 18 weeks of age) so I would be very careful with the puppy in your house if you had a parvo positive dog. It can affect the heart if they contract it very very young. If Bruno contracted parvo in his first few days of life then the heart complications are possible. I can't tell from your post if he got parvo at 3 days old or 3 days ago. As for drinking milk, at 8 weeks of age Bruno can be drinking water and eating just dog food. He should be about weaned off milk products. You can syringe water gently and slowly in his mouth. If he is recovering from infection 3 days ago then you can also syringe watered down canned dog food. I hope this helps and I wish you and Bruno the best!

Oh no, poor Gypsy Dawn! Dehydration is the number one cause of death in these animals, so you need to keep her fluids up. You can offer her small amounts of Pediasure using a syringe or small turkey baster. She will also need nutritional support such as Nutri-cal, available over the counter perhaps at your local pet store. Parvo is a medical emergency, and because it's so deadly, the sooner you can get her into the vet, the better for her. I wouldn't recommend waiting until the morning, I would take her into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see her now. Good luck!

So sorry to hear this happened. Yes, parvo is very serious and they will often get worse before they get better. Sometimes though, they do not recover despite aggressive treatment. I'm not sure what her vaccination status is but please, in the future, be sure any puppies get their full series of vaccinations. It is a series of vaccinations beginning at 6-8 weeks of age and then given every 3-4 weeks until they are about 16 weeks of age. The vaccines should be given by a veterinarian where you know the source of the vaccines and that they have been stored/handled properly. It is very rare for a properly vaccinated puppy to get parvo.
