Can my 4-month-old puppy go out before all vaccinations are done?

Magdalene is adorable! Thanks for posting a picture. I think the answer to your question really depends on where you will be taking her. She will not be fully protected until 2 weeks after her last vaccination, so you will certainly want to avoid any areas that other puppies may have been to avoid exposing her to Distemper, Parvo or respiratory viruses. Since Leptospirosis is also a concern in HI, you will want to avoid water or areas that flood. The whole cycle for the specific disease that it is used has to be completed and at least 3-4 weeks pass for the dog to really be protected against a disease as that is what the immune system needs to build immunity. So the pup that is vaccinated is not protected yet and should not be taken outside and your other pup should also get vaccinated to get protection against those preventable diseases. Best of luck!

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! 5 weeks is a bit young to leave her mother but if she is fully weaned it should be ok. We usually do not start vaccines until they are 7 weeks of age. Some breeders will give them a parvo vaccine at under 7 weeks. You should be fine until she gets her first vaccine but people with sick dogs or unvaccinated dogs shouldn't handle her and she needs to be kept away from all dogs. I hope this helps and good luck!

Unfortunately, Maximus is not fully vaccinated at this point, so he should not be going outside. Depending on your state, he can be fully vaccinated by 12 or 16 weeks. If this was his first round of shots, he will need a booster in 2-4 weeks and then his Rabies vaccine at 12-16 weeks as well as his last booster. Maximus should have minimal contact with other dogs (even where other dogs have gone to the bathroom) as you can’t be sure they are not carrying any of the viruses that Maximus is not vaccinated for that can make him very sick. I know it is difficult to keep a large active puppy inside, but your vet can work with you to have Maximus fully vaccinated in a reasonable amount of time.

Likely Nala got a combination vaccine for distemper, parvovirus, canine hepatitis, and parainfluenza. If she only got one shot, then she likely didn't have rabies, as that's a separate vaccine. A lot of states in the US require dogs to be vaccinated for rabies by law, so she will need that done. She will also need a booster shot for DHPPi (the diseases I mentioned above). I would not take Nala to places where dogs frequent, such as dog parks or parks in general, until she is fully vaccinated to prevent her from getting infected with a serious disease. I would have Nala vaccinated as soon as possible.

It is okay to bring her outside inside a carrier, but she is not yet ready to interact with other dogs or walk around in places where other dogs have been.
