My 7-week puppy won't sleep at night. I'm exhausted, what to do?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Puppies this young need their sleep, so I would not wake him up when he is sleeping! He will eventually get on more of a normal schedule, but this may take some time. When he is awake, you can absolutely play with him as much as possible during the day to tire him out, but he will still need frequent naps. This is necessary and healthy for growth! Congratulations on your new puppy. This is all very normal behavior and is generally short-lived. For now, make sure to take the puppy outside anytime she cries or wakes up in the middle of the night. This will generally decrease as she gets older. Give her vigorous play sessions right before bed as this will help her to be more tired. You can play some classical music and give her a teddy bear to snuggle with in her bed. Just make sure to remove any eyes, tags or Anything else that she may chew off and potentially swallow. Your labrador is not likely to allow her to suckle and will likely correct this behavior. At this age, if Mila wakes you up by whining in the middle of the night, I would take her outside for a potty break - she's too young to be expected to "hold it" successfully all night. Once she potties, bring her back inside and calmly put her back to bed. If needed, you can give her something like a Kong toy stuffed with peanut butter to keep her busy and help her settle again. As she gets older, she will eventually stop needing to go out during the night and will begin to sleep all night without waking up - just like a human baby :)

At her age, she isn’t able to sleep through the night. As she gets older this will improve. A few suggestions is to play with her really hard until right before bed. Also, take up her water and food about an hour before bed so she has plenty of time to digest that and go to the bathroom. Do not leave food and water with her at night. You can put a sound machine, a soft playing radio, ticking clock, or even the tv to help soothe her. You will need to plan to get up with her at least once a night for a few more weeks. Tyson is very young still so it may be that he is waking you up because he needs to go outside and go potty. You may need to make a routine of taking him out once or twice at night until he is older and can hold it the entire night. If he's just restless, a good play session followed by a potty break right before bed can help tire him out enough to sleep through the night.

7 am is actually really good for a puppy! I have clients tell me their dogs won't sleep past 3-4 am! As she gets older she likely won't want to play as much so she may sleep a little longer, but no guarantee.

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, sleeping frequently during the day is not uncommon for puppies less than 8 weeks old. Puppies need a lot of sleep just like human babies do and will change as Sugar gets older. As long as Sugar is normal otherwise (is eating and drinking normally, has normal stool and urine, etc), I wouldn't worry too much. I hope this helps!
