Why won't my 2-month-old puppy eat, and I found worms in poop?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 5 days old | 23 lbs

Hello, here is my 2 month old puppy named Van. I gave him and his sister dog food ( Pedigree ) and soon after that he didn't want to eat now. Earlier morning, my grandma fed them both withit and she said he was fine and was eating earlier. But when I fed him now, he doesn't want to eat. His sister is still much fine than him. What's wrong, doc? If he needs to go to the vet, I can't do that because I can't afford one. Please help me..I also found worms in their poop in the earlier days before....

Try to feed them little and often, but if still being sick they could benefit from an anti sickness injection or medications. They also need to be treated for worms and have their vaccinations ( when they are feeling a bit better ).

Almost every puppy is born with worms that are passed from their mother. It is an interesting life cycle where the microscopic worms encyst in the mother and are passed to the puppies in the uterus. They can also get the worms from the environment.

Therefore, we always treat puppies for worms when they are about a month old. It's best if you can take them into your vet for an exam. You can also take in a couple of poo samples, so the vet can look under the microscope and determine exactly what types of worms the pups have. This will help ensure we give the best medication. They will also be able to check them for any other health issues and start vaccines to keep them healthy.

This looks to me like a roundworm which are very common in puppies. Typically, puppies get roundworms from their mother's during pregnancy and during nursing. I would recommend Sofia get dewormed with a solution or product containing pyrantel. She will need to be dewormed 2-3 times, each time 2 weeks apart from each other. Your veterinarian will have this medication for Sofia and will probably want to do a fecal parasite screening test to confirm she is negative for all parasites after treatment.

If your puppy is not eating at all and this began within the last day or two, I would be very concerned about a serious medical problem - if this is the case, you should get him to a vet right away. Common causes of not eating in puppies would include parvo or intestinal obstruction, but almost any serious illness could cause not eating as a symptom so it would be hard to know the cause without an exam and possibly some blood work or x-rays. If this problem has been going on for a while and your pup is acting fairly normal otherwise, then yes - it's possible that he could have worms, or he may be a picky eater who would do better with a different diet. You could try deworming him with a dewormer labeled for dogs such as Panacur - you can get this over the counter at many pet stores, just follow the dosing instructions on the label for your puppy's weight. You may also want to try a different brand or flavor of puppy chow, or mix some canned puppy food in with his dry food to see if this helps to tempt his appetite. If this doesn't seem to help, then I would recommend having him seen by a vet to find out if there is some other reason for his poor appetite.

My puppy threw up worms and won't eat. Is a vet visit urgent?

Ideally he should be seen by a vet to stabilise his condition and correct dehydration as well as supplemental feeding and a full health check to rule out additional illnesses reducing his appetite. Consider surrendering him to your local shelter to get him the best care. In the meantime an oral worm dose carefully dosed for his weight from your vets office or pet store, pedialyte and a mousse textured high calorie recovery or puppy food is recommended

My puppy eats poop, has worms, and won't eat. Should I see a vet?

It sounds like Stella has intestinal worms which are common in puppies. Puppies with intestinal worms can eat their poop as well, but even dogs without intestinal worms eat their poop. They just like the taste. I am very concerning that she isn't eating anything, and due to that, I would take her into a vet immediately. It's quite serious when such a young puppy won't eat. Why is my puppy vomiting, not eating, with bloody stool & worms?

I am concerned Mooshi may have a serious viral infection as well as an abundant of worms. Since he is so small and easily dehydrated I would strongly encourage to take him to your vet for an exam. Your vet can assess his hydration, do a fecal to figure out the type of worms and dewormer he needs and whether he needs any additional medicine to combat the vomiting, lethargy and diarrhea. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better really soon.

Puppy threw up dewormer, sick, vomiting, diarrhea. What should I do?

Poor pups. While a heavy parasite load can cause severe GI upset, and anemia which can cause a pup to become extremely lethargic, have bloody diarrhea, etc, I would also want to rule out underlying illnesses as a possibility. It would be best to bring them to a vet ASAP especially if they are lethargic or unable to keep any food or water down as puppies can quickly become very dehydrated. They may also need supportive care such as an IV or injected medications if they are very ill from the parasites or other causes. You can try continuing to offer water, or rubbing a little honey on their gums for energy until you can get to the vet, however due to the severity of symptoms it would be best to seek emergency care.

My 9-week-old puppy won't eat and keeps throwing up. Is it serious?

This could be a number of things - parasites, a bacterial or viral GI infection, or even an intestinal blockage. At 2.5 months of age, Gus is especially at risk for parvovirus, a serious GI infection. We always worry about fluid loss in young puppies, so I would recommend getting him to a vet ASAP, to diagnose the cause of the vomiting, and start appropriate therapy.
