My puppy is not eating, lethargic, and has white gums. What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 17 days old | 4 lbs

I have a 6 week old Australian Shepard/Lab mix puppy named Vegeta. His siblings have round worms so that’s what we just gave him medicine for. But his siblings, even with the round worms, are still very playful and active. Vegeta won’t eat, play, or even get up to relieve himself. His gums are white which is a side effect from the parasites (so I’ve been told by neighbors). I don’t know what to do. He’s been sleeping for the past two days.

The white or pale gums are a sign of severe anemia. It could be due to a high worm burden or it may have another underlying cause. Vegeta should be seen by your veterinarian to diagnose the underlying cause. Given current circumstances, you may need to drop him off at the clinic then wait for your veterinarian to call you. Supportive care may be indicated until he is feeling better.
