My dog won't eat, is lethargic, and has pale gums. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 11 days old | 10.5 lbs

My dog hasn’t eaten in about 4 days and she seems a little dehydrated and down. She still has energy (not as much as she used to) but refuses to eat. we saw a vet and said she might be anemic because she hasn’t thrown up but does have pale gums. What other reasons may be the cause?

Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. This could absolutely be due to anemia given her pale mucous membranes. I recommend that you have Snow evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Treatment would be based on findings. Good luck and have a good night! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Thanks for the question and pictures. So gum color can vary a lot from day to day based on activity. The best way to evaluate perfusion and red blood cell numbers is with a test call packed cell volume, very easy to run. Regarding appetite, hard to say baed on one decreased episode, so best to continue monitor and evaluate over next couple of days. If your dog continues to be off, please contact your local veterinarian for an exam and evaluation for possible causes including a packed cell volume and blood work if indicated. Hope this is just very transitory and will back eating normally in the next day or two. Be sure keep your dog's feeding and watering schedule the same so that you will know if things are off. If she has pale gums then she needs to be examined by a vet immediately to determine the cause and treat, especially if she also has abnormal breathing. My dog is throwing up, weak, with pale gums. What should I do?

This is very concerning as severe vomiting can result in hypovolemic shock (decreased circulating blood volume) which can be life-threatening. This can result in pale gums and weakness as you describe. The vomiting can happen from many conditions such as a gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further evaluation and treatment. This is a medical emergency. At the very least, they can start IV fluids and start medications to try to stop the vomiting while they find out what is affecting her. I hope that she makes a full recovery! Good luck!

My dog has pale white gums and is lethargic. What could be wrong?

Oh dear! Pale or white gums can be associated with severe anemia, shock, or heart failure - this is a very concerning sign that warrants immediate veterinary attention. A warm dry nose is a pretty non-specific sign that doesn't really mean anything in particular, and a pale or thinning haircoat can be associated with any kind of long-term illness. It sounds like Bae may be seriously ill, so I would recommend taking him to an emergency clinic tonight to be seen. If this isn't possible, then I would take him to your regular veterinarian first thing in the morning. Your veterinarian can do blood work, x-rays, or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and see what kind of treatment is needed.

Hi. The pale gums and weight loss are very serious signs! I don't know the age, or sex, or history, so it's a bit hard to review the most likely possibilities. But with pale gums and weight loss, 8d be concerned about internal bleeding, cancer, immune mediated disease, parasites, k8dney disease, and many more. An exam, lab work, and x-rays will be needed to get down to the the potential cause. I would recommend getting him seen right away.

The white or pale gums are a sign of severe anemia. It could be due to a high worm burden or it may have another underlying cause. Vegeta should be seen by your veterinarian to diagnose the underlying cause. Given current circumstances, you may need to drop him off at the clinic then wait for your veterinarian to call you. Supportive care may be indicated until he is feeling better.

Why is my Doberman mix lethargic, not eating, and has pale gums?

With a Doberman, I would first want to rule-out heart disease. Dobermans are predisposed to having a heart condition that can cause heart failure, which would present like this. However, the fact that she is a cross makes hereditary heart disease less likely. There are many other conditions that can cause these exact same problems such as intracellular parasites/bacteria, intestinal parasites and blood clotting disorders leading to anemia. Either way, the fact that she is pale and lethargic warrants an urgent visit to the veterinarian. The vet will be able to help narrow-down the cause of this and advise the best treatment. In many cases, these signs can be completely reversible and she can have a good quality of life again. I hope that helps and Sassy gets better soon.
