My puppy won't eat her food. Is it medical or the wrong type?

You may have to experiment with various puppy foods to see which one she prefers to eat and that you feel comfortable purchasing. Table food is discouraged for many reasons especially since it can cause stomach/gut problems. You can also try to flavor the dry food with some chicken broth to see if she will eat it. If she is not wanting to eat with or without vomiting/diarrhea, you should take her to your vet and have her evaluated. Not eating is serious especially in small breed puppies. Not eating can be caused by parasites (worms), infection, inflammation, not liking the food, etc. Your vet can evaluate her, run some tests (fecal, blood, etc) and advise what treatment is needed or they can just suggest nutritional things to try. I hope Bailey gets well soon.

It is possible that something is medically wrong with her however, I would first recommend feeding her the old flavor of food to see if that's the issue. If she eats that flavor then you may want to consider keeping her on that food. If you would rather switch you can slowly transition but mixing the two together and slowly transition the old one out.

Poor Bailey. The diarrhea could be present for many reasons and it could be related to a vaccine reaction. Parasites, bacteria overgrowth, a change in diet or something more sinister like parvo are also possible. I recommend to play it safe and have Bailey examined today by the veterinarian. Bailey is a small breed dog and you should switch her to adult food around 12 months old. You can begin bathing Bailey now. Make sure to use a gentle shampoo such as a puppy shampoo. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Sometimes puppies can have a slight decrease in appetite when they first come home since it is a big adjustment, however it sounds like you've had her a few days. Given her age and her breed I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian to make sure she doesn't have low blood sugar, parasites, or another medical problem affecting her appetite. If she also seems weak, lethargic or disoriented you should see an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. She is adorable!

Baily is so cute! I am concerned though that he is not eating and having such intestinal upset. I would recommend you take Baily in for an exam with your vet as soon as possible. Puppies this young can get dehydrated very quickly and become quite ill. I am worried about the possibility of intestinal parasites, eating something he shouldn't have (dietary indiscretion), or even a bacterial or viral infection (like parvovirus). Baily may need some tests to see what the underlying cause is, such as a parvo test and fecal test. He also may need some anti-nausea medication, antibiotics, or even fluid therapy if he is dehydrated. I hope he gets back on track quickly!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is very abnormal for a 7month old puppy to vomit that much. I recommend taking her to the vet with a fresh stool sample to rule out intestinal parasites first. She may also need X-rays to rule out an obstruction. I would stop feeding her the human foods as she is likely to hold out for those vs eating her puppy food diet. You can try adding canned puppy food to her dry food to get her more intested. As long as there are no health concerns she will eat when she's hungry. Right now, you are caving to her before she caves and eats and is therefore promoting a picky behavior.
