My puppy won't eat, vomits, and is always sleepy. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 6 days old | 2 lbs

My dog is 36 days old. Earlier he used to eat royal canin maxi starter dog meal thrice a day but not he doesn't eat it at all. He only eats curd and cottage cheese. Nothing else than that. Vomits once a day. Very sleepy all time. He has been given puppy dp and deworming once. It's been 3-4 days now but he is still same.

I'm not sure what "puppy dp" (perhaps a distemper/parvo vaccine) is but I'm concerned about Billi. Sometimes only one deworming treatment doesn't completely resolve a worm infestation. Ideally, puppies are dewormed every 2 weeks starting at 2 weeks of age until they are 12 weeks old. However, I rarely see puppies actually feel bad if worms are present, especially if they have been dewormed once.

My bigger concern is another, more serious problem, such as parvovirus or an intestinal foreign body/blockage. Puppies aren't fully protected with just one vaccine (if that is what you mean by "dp") so it is possible for them to contact it. He needs to be seen very urgently, as I'm worried about hypoglycemia and dehydration. Please get him checked out by a vet as soon as possible.

I am sorry to hear that Billi isn’t feeling well. All of what you describe is very abnormal and extremely concerning.

Blood sugar levels in young puppies can drop quickly when they are not eating and/or are having vomiting and diarrhea. It’s possible that is contributing to him being sleepy all the time. You can attempt to rub some corn syrup or honey on his gums and see if that helps him be more alert. HOWEVER—this will NOT fix the underlying problem that is causing him to not eat and to vomit. He may have viral or bacterial gastroenteritis, he may have an intestinal parasite, (even though he has been dewormed this is possible) he may have what is called an intussusception which is a mechanical problem in the intestine where the intestine telescopes on itself. He may have been born with a liver shunt or defective kidneys.
The bottom line is that you need to get him to a vet ASAP. It sounds like his condition could deteriorate rapidly, and could be deadly.

I wish I had better news and more that I could offer for you to try at home, but you really, really need to get him to a vet.

Though I am worried something else is going on since you lost a puppy recently. I worry most about parvo virus in puppies this age, especially if they are yet to be vaccinated. I would have this puppy seen today by your Vet and tested for parvo virus as it is VERY contagious and if it is the cause it will likely affect the entire litter. If it isn't parvo the Vet can at least get this puppy feeling better and prevent dehydration. Good luck!

My puppy is vomiting, weak, and not eating or playing. What's wrong?

I'm so sorry to hear that Diablo isn't feeling well. Without knowing Diablo's age, it's hard to know exactly how concerned to be, but vomiting, weakness, and not eating are very concerns signs. I would recommend taking Diablo to his veterinarian as soon as possible. If that's not possible, feed him a bland diet of boiled chicken (or other simple meat) and rice, with some extra water mixed in. Without treatment, he may keep getting more sick. I would be concerned about parvo virus, an intestinal blockage, or something else depending on his age.

My puppy threw up and won't eat after wormer. Is this normal?

I am not sure the type of dewormer or the vaccines that you used but vomiting often, lethargy, and not eating are not typical 2-4 days after vaccination and deworming. It is very concerning that she is having these signs and she could have an infection or possibly have a parasite that was not susceptible to the dewormer that you used. She really should be seen by a vet to determine the cause and treat. She may need an anti-vomiting injection, antibiotic, antacid, gastrointestinal protectant, dewormer, and/or other medications to treat. You could try to find a clinic that would work out a payment plan or apply for care credit and have her seen. Hope she feels better soon!

Puppy threw up dewormer, sick, vomiting, diarrhea. What should I do?

Poor pups. While a heavy parasite load can cause severe GI upset, and anemia which can cause a pup to become extremely lethargic, have bloody diarrhea, etc, I would also want to rule out underlying illnesses as a possibility. It would be best to bring them to a vet ASAP especially if they are lethargic or unable to keep any food or water down as puppies can quickly become very dehydrated. They may also need supportive care such as an IV or injected medications if they are very ill from the parasites or other causes. You can try continuing to offer water, or rubbing a little honey on their gums for energy until you can get to the vet, however due to the severity of symptoms it would be best to seek emergency care.

My puppy threw up, is lethargic, and not vaccinated. Should I worry?

Poor puppy. That looks like digested food that he vomited up. He may have eaten something that he shouldn't have. Therefore I would try to fast him for 12 hours and then offer him small amounts of boiled chicken and plain rice. If he is still vomiting, lethargic, or has lack of appetite and diarrhea, then I would be concerned he may have either intestinal parasites or has contracted the deadly parvovirus. It is best to have him seen by your local veterinarian if he is not getting better. Hopefully he just got into something he shouldn't have and will show improvement within the next 12 to 24 hours. Unfortunately, this is not normal behavior for a young puppy and is pretty concerning. At less than two months old, your puppy needs to eat regularly or he risks having low blood sugar, which can cause serious health problems. Vomiting is not typically caused by stress and all these signs make me worry about a more serious illness. Please have him seen by a veterinarian right away because his lack of appetite and vomiting are very serious.

Why is my unvaccinated puppy vomiting and skinny after deworming?

I would be worried about parvo with those symptoms or a bacterial infection. If it is parvo, he was exposed and incubating the virus before the vaccine so it was not protective. The best thing to do is feed boiled chicken and rice and try to keep him hydrated with pedialyte or Gatorade. I would try to find an ER clinic or a vet that takes after hours calls to get him seen today for a test and further treatment
