My 5-month-old puppy won't bark at strangers. Is this normal behavior?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Labrador Retrievers are incredible dogs that sometimes love everybody. They do not always make the best watch dogs. But, he is still very young, & when he matures, he may become more protective of his home & bark more. Otherwise, remember, people can be very wary of large dogs, & this may be enough to keep people out. Take care.

Nothings wrong. Some pets just don't bark really. It doesn't mean he is sick or that there is anything medically wrong with him. He is just a really calm dog that doesn't feel the need to bark. And likely as he gets older he will bark every now and again, but it seems this just isn't in his nature and he is content with life.

Hi there. If Browny isn't barking at anyone, this sounds like good news - most owners spend time trying to get their dogs to *stop* barking at people or other dogs. So congrats, and enjoy your pup. It doesn't sound like a problem at all :)

Temperament definitely has a strong genetic component, so if Kyra's mom was mellow, Kyra is more likely to be mellow. The dad's temperament also figures in as well. You're not going to get a complete look until she's closer to social maturity around 2 years of age. Being exposed to less people now may make her more suspicious of strangers in the future and she may bark more as he gets older, but it's hard to say. It might be worthwhile to explore finding a dog who's parents are more similar to what you're looking for.

Your puppies are still young and are maturing before your very eyes. They are now behaving like dogs. There is no need for concern here. : ) They are likely just happy to see you and now want to express their happiness. As long as they are still eating and drinking normal and not having any diarrhea or vomiting, they are fine medically. Their barking is normal dog behavior for maturing young puppies. It's likely this behavior is related to puberty. Sometimes temperament can change. Spaying and neutering may help but training is still needed. I also recommend to work with a trainer. Someone at doggie daycare may be able to help or recommend someone. She is so young I wouldn't expect her to go blind, although it can happen. But because of this symptom I would bring her to a veterinarian to make sure they evaluate her eyes. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
