My puppy is only 3 lbs. Is she big enough for her vaccinations?

Hello and congratulations on adding Lilly to your family! Your core vaccines at this age need to be Distemper/Parvo and a Bordetella. She is older enough to start Leptospirosis and Lyme disease if these are indicated based upon where you live. Ask the vet if she would recommend these vaccines. Lilly will need another set of boosters in 3 weeks and she will be old enough to get her Rabies vaccine at that age. You may also discussed separating some of these vaccines so Lilly is not receiving 4-5 at one time. Hope this helps!

Vaccinations are the same dose in Chihuahuas as in Great Danes because the amount needed to vaccinated is based on immune response NOT size of the dog. The vaccines give the correct dose to stimulate an immune response and it is the same for all dogs regardless of their size. It is never recommend to request a partial dose because it will not work nor will it provide protection of Lala because she won't be given enough to stimulate her immune response. The size of the dog is immaterial when it comes to vaccines.

Hello, and thanks for your question. It's good to monitor the weight as the puppy grows simply for monitoring purposes, but the 5-in-1 distemper vaccination does not depend on the puppy's weight. We give the same vaccine dose to a tiny puppy as we do to a large one - the dose is universal, as it's the amount needed to generate the immune response we need. For adequate immunity to develop, Sugar should receive her last set of vaccinations between 16-20 weeks regardless of size. Vaccination manufacturers will not guarantee protection if vaccinations are not finished between 16-20 weeks of age. She will be absolutely fine to have her vaccines at her size. Good questions! Puppies start their vaccinations around 7-8 weeks of age so Luna is definitely ready to get her first shots. She can go outside to use the bathroom. Just do not take her to areas where a lot of dogs congregate like dog parks. I would not take her around too many other dogs unless you know they have been properly vaccinated until she is done with all her shots around 16 weeks of age. Hope this answers your question.
