My puppy had a URI from milk aspiration. Will it have future problems?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor baby! Namak has been through a lot already. I am hoping the aspiration was just through the nasal cavity and wasn't an aspiration to the lungs. If it was nasal I am sure he will be fine as even normal puppies can occasionally do this when bottle fed. I would recommend continuing antibiotics though. Contact your vet and get more if they agree. Good luck!

Pneumonia isn't guaranteed if milk is aspirated once, but it can happen and it would take a few days for it to develop. I would continue to monitor him, and should his breathing become raspy, his appetite decreases, or he become lethargic, I would take him into the vet right away.

If the kitten has aspirated milk it will have serious trouble breathing. It will get aspiration pneumonia and likely die. This is an emergency. If you think the kitten has aspirated milk and it is showing upper respiratory problems, is lethargic, then it must be seen by a veterinarian now, if it is to have any chance to survive at all. There are no home treatment options. This kitten will need intensive medical care in a hospital.

Hello there, Unfortunately, this sounds like he may have aspirated milk which can quickly lead to pneumonia in a pup this young. I would monitor Carter and his temperature very carefully (99.5-102.0 is normal) for signs of infection which include lethargy, weakness, labored breathing, and decreased appetite. If this occurs, I'd recommend getting Carter to the closest emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. At his young age and size, he can become dehydrated and very ill very quickly. URI can be caused by a host of bacteria and mycoplasma. Theres a possibility that theres still infection and your best chance of success would come from running a culture and sensitivity. Theres also a possibility that there's been some permanent damage/changes to your kitten's respiratory passage way and sinuses. This may results in permanent noise and some cats will have discharge forever. It would be hard to say if this is present without an advanced diagnostic such as a CT/MRI. Adding in Lysine may help as well. Best of luck with the kitten!

She needs to see a vet for treatment. Treatment for aspiration which can turn into aspiration pneumonia is oxygen therapy, intravenous (IV) catheter access, IV fluids, and IV antibiotics. Please take her into a vet now. Best of luck.

They are usually good at keeping things out of their airway, so it's rather difficult to make a dogs aspirate even if you give too much at one time. If she aspirated some, then it would definitely be obvious and she would be coughing right away. If you did not see that, then there is no need to worry about any problems developing later on.
