My puppy inhaled water. What are the treatments for aspiration?

I'm so sorry to hear Bentley had such a scare! Ingestion of water can lead to fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema) and a secondary infection (such as pneumonia). As you found him right away and he was treated quickly, typically these dogs do recover fully. He may be sent home with a medication to help decrease any remaining fluid in his lungs (such as Lasix) and a prophylactic antibiotic to prevent infection. When he is home, continue to monitor him closely over the following days for any lethargy, inappetence, wheezing, or difficulty breathing. If these are seen, I would have him rechecked immediately. If he is otherwise acting normally, I would have him rechecked after he finishes his medications and then I would expect him to be fine. Good luck!

Poor girl. The only thing you can do in the meantime is to try and unclog her airway. You can do so by using a humidifier or placing her in the bathroom with the hot shower running for 5-10 minutes once or twice a day. You can also use a pediatric syringe to help remove any mucous plugs. However, it sounds like her infection is quite severe, so I would look into taking her to another vet who can get her in sooner. Young puppies do have a tendency to develop pneumonia quickly after a prolonged upper respiratory infection that is left untreated, so its best to get her seen right away. This is usually treated with antibiotics. I recommend that you have your pup evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I would take Jebediah into a vet now. If he aspirated cough syrup, this could potentially lead to aspiration pneumonia. It is concerning his breathing sounds wet, and that is something that needs to be checked out by a vet. Best of luck.

If the kitten has aspirated milk it will have serious trouble breathing. It will get aspiration pneumonia and likely die. This is an emergency. If you think the kitten has aspirated milk and it is showing upper respiratory problems, is lethargic, then it must be seen by a veterinarian now, if it is to have any chance to survive at all. There are no home treatment options. This kitten will need intensive medical care in a hospital.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor baby! Namak has been through a lot already. I am hoping the aspiration was just through the nasal cavity and wasn't an aspiration to the lungs. If it was nasal I am sure he will be fine as even normal puppies can occasionally do this when bottle fed. I would recommend continuing antibiotics though. Contact your vet and get more if they agree. Good luck!

You are absolutely correct in being concerned, as this condition can progress down into the lungs and cause pneumonia if not treated. I recommend having her seen by a vet sooner than next week so that she can start the appropriate course of treatment.
