Puppy choked on formula, breathing issues. More antibiotics?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If your puppy is not improving after being on medications for a week or is worsening, I would schedule a recheck with your vet. Sometimes switching to a different antibiotic may help. The particular antibiotic that your puppy is on may also cause growth defects, but this is rarely seen. I typically use Clavamox or doxycycline for Respiratory bugs in puppies. Another alternative treatment your vet might consider, is initiating nebulization therapy to help relieve some of the symptoms your puppy is experiencing. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Pea! It should right itself if that is why she is congested today. Cats can be very dramatic with liquid medication and some may have gotten up her nose. Aspirating in to the lungs would be more serious. As long as she only sounds congested in her throat/nose area she should be ok. Watch for loss of appetite, lethargy or yellow-green discharge from the nose. If any of those symptoms occur she should see your Vet. Have a great day!

Hello there, Unfortunately, this sounds like he may have aspirated milk which can quickly lead to pneumonia in a pup this young. I would monitor Carter and his temperature very carefully (99.5-102.0 is normal) for signs of infection which include lethargy, weakness, labored breathing, and decreased appetite. If this occurs, I'd recommend getting Carter to the closest emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. At his young age and size, he can become dehydrated and very ill very quickly. This is usually treated with antibiotics. I recommend that you have your pup evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. He may have a respiratory infection that requires an oral antibiotic for treatment. Choking is usually from the milk building up in the back of the throat or going down the wrong pipe (food/liquid should go down the esophagus not the trachea which is the tube that leads in to the lungs). He may be taking the bottle too fast, slow him down, hold him up for a while after , even try a different puppy formula. Also be sure to check the roof of his mouth to be sure there isn't a cleft palate (hole in roof of the mouth). I wish you the best!
