My 8-month-old puppy lost a canine tooth. Is it adult or baby?

Canine (fang) teeth usually erupt between 5-6 months of age. Since Daisy is not quite 5 months old yet, the chance of her having a fully erupted adult canine tooth is quite slim. The tooth in the picture looks much more like a baby tooth than an impressively large adult canine tooth in a dog her size. With that said, I'd still recommend having your vet perform a full oral exam on Daisy during her next visit. They may also recommend taking dental x-rays to be sure that the full tooth root came out, as retained roots can be problematic. Odds are good that her tooth was already just a little bit loose and this rough playing just sped up the process. It's always better to be safe than sorry!

I think this looks like a baby canine tooth, which would normally be falling out around this age. Usually the adult tooth is already partially growing in, so if you truly feel like this may have been an adult tooth you may want your vet to take a look.

Great question! Ellie's tooth should fall out on its own, as she is teething and her adult teeth will be coming in soon. You might not even see the tooth fall out, as puppies often swallow their baby teeth when they fall out. Best of luck, I hope that helps!

The tooth that is cracked looks like a baby canine tooth. The adult canine tooth will not come in until closer to 6 months of age. The problem is if the pulp cavity of the tooth is open, the broken tooth can be painful and can get infected. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Ella and determine if anything needs to be done about the tooth now or if we can just wait for her adult tooth to come in and push the baby tooth out. Given her age, that's her baby canine. Playing with a sock wouldn't be enough to tear out an adult canine. As long as the gum looks clean and isn't continuing to bleed after a few minutes, she will be fine. She's at the right age to be shedding her baby canines and her adult ones should be coming through soon.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From your picture it appears to be a baby canine tooth. In small breed dogs sometimes the baby teeth can become retained and the puppy doesn’t lose them at all. I recommend removing the baby teeth that haven’t shed on their own when the puppy is spayed or neutered. My thoughts are that at least one Chacha’s baby canine teeth didn’t shed when it was supposed to. It was likely delayed. And it’s a GOOD thing it’s out now. If you are worried have your Vet take a look to see if any more baby teeth are present and discuss removing them at her spay. I hope this helps and have a great day!
