My 4-month puppy lost a tooth. Is it a baby tooth? Should I worry?

Canine (fang) teeth usually erupt between 5-6 months of age. Since Daisy is not quite 5 months old yet, the chance of her having a fully erupted adult canine tooth is quite slim. The tooth in the picture looks much more like a baby tooth than an impressively large adult canine tooth in a dog her size. With that said, I'd still recommend having your vet perform a full oral exam on Daisy during her next visit. They may also recommend taking dental x-rays to be sure that the full tooth root came out, as retained roots can be problematic. Odds are good that her tooth was already just a little bit loose and this rough playing just sped up the process. It's always better to be safe than sorry!

Puppies are in the process of teething from 12 weeks to 6-7 months of age, so it's completely normal to see an occasional baby tooth with a bloody root on the floor during this time :) Often, there will also be small streaks of blood on toys or chew items - this is because the pup's gums are bleeding a little, and is also normal. All of his adult teeth should be coming in within the next 2-4 weeks, so after that the problem should resolve on its own.

I think this looks like a baby canine tooth, which would normally be falling out around this age. Usually the adult tooth is already partially growing in, so if you truly feel like this may have been an adult tooth you may want your vet to take a look.

I would not be too concerned about the tooth at this time. It is difficult to tell from the picture, but the tooth in question looks as if it is a baby tooth that has broken off. If this is the case, the tooth will fall out sometime between 12-16 weeks of age. If this is an adult tooth, then I would recommend you continue to monitor it for now. If the tooth is still looking abnormal at the time of your dog’s spay (around 6 months of age) then your vet can remove it while she is already under anesthesia. If it was the puppy tooth (thin, sharp pointed), then yes the adult tooth (larger, more blunt) will come in behind it and replace this space. But if it was his permanent adult tooth (highly unlikely) it won't grow back. You can always have us look at it to help you determine if it was a juvenile or adult tooth if you need help.

Usually the puppy teeth will not come out until the adult teeth are pushing through. At this point you can continue to monitor the area. Watch for any signs of infection in the tissue like redness or discharge. Most adult canines will start growing in between 5.5 - 6 months of age. if they are not grown in by 8 months of age or if you see any evidence of infection, have him examined by the veterinarian. If Dozer is only 3 months old then it is very common for loose milk teeth to fall out during rough play. It should be absolutely fine as even if the tooth has broken the permanent tooth should push the fragment out when it erupts. You can have a look and feel the gum line, you shouldn't be able to see or feel any fragments where it has come from. If in doubt you would need to have your vet check for you.
