My 4-month puppy's cracked tooth is red. Is it a baby or adult tooth?

I would not be too concerned about the tooth at this time. It is difficult to tell from the picture, but the tooth in question looks as if it is a baby tooth that has broken off. If this is the case, the tooth will fall out sometime between 12-16 weeks of age. If this is an adult tooth, then I would recommend you continue to monitor it for now. If the tooth is still looking abnormal at the time of your dog’s spay (around 6 months of age) then your vet can remove it while she is already under anesthesia. Canine (fang) teeth usually erupt between 5-6 months of age. Since Daisy is not quite 5 months old yet, the chance of her having a fully erupted adult canine tooth is quite slim. The tooth in the picture looks much more like a baby tooth than an impressively large adult canine tooth in a dog her size. With that said, I'd still recommend having your vet perform a full oral exam on Daisy during her next visit. They may also recommend taking dental x-rays to be sure that the full tooth root came out, as retained roots can be problematic. Odds are good that her tooth was already just a little bit loose and this rough playing just sped up the process. It's always better to be safe than sorry!

I hate to hear Ellie is giving you a scare! At her age it could be either. Save the tooth and take it into your vet's office. You can usually tell by looking at it. When in doubt, you could also make an appointment and bring Ellie with you so they can look in her mouth which may help to know if it is an adult tooth it. Hopefully it's just a baby tooth! Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Tyson. Most likely this a puppy tooth based on the age you gave for him. I don't think this will cause problems as many of the adult teeth have yet to erupt and fully develop. The cracked or broken tooth will most likely be pushed out as the adult tooth forms. If you have any doubts, I would let your veterinarian take a look at Tyson. The tooth may become discolored also over time which as long as it falls out and is replaced, shouldn't be a problem. Typically the adult teeth will starting coming around 5.5-6 months of age. If Z broke the puppy teeth, then they will fall out soon and he should be fine. Monitor him for any signs of pain or abscesses. Please see the veterinarian when in doubt. If you can post a photo, it would be easier to tell. I hope he stays out of trouble!

Hello, and thank you for your question. I would recommend getting Archi seen by a vet within the next few days, to assess the severity of the broken tooth. If the fracture is deep enough to expose the nerve, it can cause pain and infection, and can affect eruption of the adult tooth. In this case, they may recommend extraction of the tooth. If the fracture is shallow, the vet may just recommend monitoring it until it falls out (usually by 6 months of age). In the meantime, offer Archi the option of softer food (canned food, watered down dry food) in case the broken tooth is causing him pain. Monitor for any discolouration of the tooth which would warrant immediate attention by a vet. I hope this helps, and that Archi does okay!
