Is it normal for a 5-month-old puppy to lose her front teeth?

This is a baby tooth so it’s normal to lose them. Between four and six months dogs will lose all of their baby teeth. Sometimes you won’t see them when they fall out. Poodles do sometimes have retained canine baby teeth so if those aren’t gone by seven months they may need to be removed so the adult teeth can come in properly. This is completely normal and right on schedule. These are the first teeth to fall out. Adult teeth will appear in those spots soon. The teething process takes about 6-10 weeks total. Most of the time, the teeth just seem to disappear....puppies swallow them or they end up in the grass outside, etc. Usually the last teeth to fall out are the canine or “fang” teeth. many chihuahuas lose their front teeth and sometimes even other teeth at a young age, this breed is prone for very bad dentition and it is not considered abnormal. in most cases it does not cause pain and does not cause any problem eating, especially if only the front teeth are the issue.

Canine (fang) teeth usually erupt between 5-6 months of age. Since Daisy is not quite 5 months old yet, the chance of her having a fully erupted adult canine tooth is quite slim. The tooth in the picture looks much more like a baby tooth than an impressively large adult canine tooth in a dog her size. With that said, I'd still recommend having your vet perform a full oral exam on Daisy during her next visit. They may also recommend taking dental x-rays to be sure that the full tooth root came out, as retained roots can be problematic. Odds are good that her tooth was already just a little bit loose and this rough playing just sped up the process. It's always better to be safe than sorry!

Hello, congratulations on your new puppy. Most puppies will begin to exchange their teeth around 3 months and may last until they are 8 months of age. In some instances with large breed puppies, their puppy teeth fail to fall and they need to be removed by your veterinarian, however this occurs more often in small/toy breed dogs. Typically the adult teeth will starting coming around 5.5-6 months of age. If Z broke the puppy teeth, then they will fall out soon and he should be fine. Monitor him for any signs of pain or abscesses. Please see the veterinarian when in doubt. If you can post a photo, it would be easier to tell. I hope he stays out of trouble!

Given her age, that's her baby canine. Playing with a sock wouldn't be enough to tear out an adult canine. As long as the gum looks clean and isn't continuing to bleed after a few minutes, she will be fine. She's at the right age to be shedding her baby canines and her adult ones should be coming through soon.
